As we celebrate the life of our dear friend Masood, the Malik family has been blessed with the friendship of four wonderful human beings, Masood, Semra, Aniqa and Sena which has enriched our lives tremendously.

We are hurt and saddened at the untimely demise of our very dear friend, Masood. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, son and a brother, a trusted friend and an advisor.

It is quite ironic that as I began my journey to face the challenge from the Divine with lung cancer as my friend, Masood, was ending his.

Masood paved my path with courage and quiet strength and dignity. Even from his death bed, he advised me to face this challenge with strength and courage. Those were his last words for me. He always thought of others before he thought of himself. What a remarkable man!!! In spite of his failing health, he took the time and traveled hundreds of miles with his family to support us through a difficult time in our lives. As always he was always there for his friends even at the expense of his own comfort.

He has been a role model not only for his children but has guided my daughter, through difficult times. He gave us tremendous support and strength for which we were for ever grateful. In his typical way he helped others sometimes when he was facing his own difficulties with his illness, with the dignity and courage, we have seen Masood display since we have shared a special bond of friendship for more than 15 years.

I would soon learn that we were hardly alone as recipients of Masood's generosity and concern. We are compelled to measure the loss of our friend and colleague, father and husband each in our own way and turn instead to what we can share, the extraordinary life that touched us all.

So in this chapel no final goodbyes. Masood's influence was much too profound for words of such finality. Instead, a simple thank you to an intelligent, smart, accomplished, wonderful and caring man, a simple guy from Karachi who enriched our lives and passed through this world all too quickly.

Finally a poem from an unknown author, which I found comforting and reminiscent of Masood:

I am sure my friend Masood will be happy to see read at this service.
When I am gone, release me, let me go,
I have so many things to say and do.
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,
be happy that we had these years.

I give you my love.
You can only guess
How much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown,
But now it’s time I travel on alone.

So grieve a while, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It’s only for a while that we must part
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away,
For life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will come.

Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near,
And if you listen with your heart you’ll hear,
All my love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and “Welcome Home.”

Finally, I found these words comforting and reminiscent of Masood

Grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears
But laugh and talk of me
As if I were beside you.

We who worked under Masood in Rochester probably will remember him first as a friend and mentor, and second as our manager. Masood truly managed "by walking around", and by talking with us, not as workers, but as colleagues. We always felt we were a part of the team...his team. We were greatly blessed by his presence. Please accept our deepest condolences.

I knew Masood through my many years working at Bell-Northern Research in Ottawa, though never worked directly for him. All of us knew he was a fine, dedicated and talented man. The effort being made to pass the word to and through those who no longer work at Nortel, speaks volumes about the depth of respect we feel for Masood. We were all fortunate to have known and worked with him.

Dear Tariq Family,

I just wanted to extend my deepest sympathies to all of you during this sad time. I knew Masood when he was AVP of Design Technology at Nortel, it was many years ago and I will never forget his kindness and genuine concern for all of us. I was young back then and just starting out in the business world, I know I drove my boss Eric Doggett nuts at times (he reported to Masood then), however, Masood was always someone you could talk to about things. He shall be missed but never forgotten. Thoughts and prayers for all of you in the weeks and months to come.

Dear Semra,
As someone that had been fortunate enough at one time in my career to work closely with Masood, his integrity was always at the top of his many attributes. He seemed to love life and as a person I still remember his kindness. One example was when he approached me at rather big gathering of people in Israel to say hello after I had not seen him for at least five years. He truly was one of the good guys. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Masood was a true friend and inspiration to his employees at the Nortel Rochester, NY location.

Although Nortel was ready to give up on our division, Masood never did!

Masood would always great each and every employee by first name and was sincerely interested in their lives. We would always look foreward to our "birthday month breakfast" with him.

One of the funniest memories I have of Masood is when we had a "Spring Break" day at Nortel. Masood came to work to find a swimming pool and sand box in his office and his boss Doug (who was in on the deal) waiting at the front desk to see him.

Tariq Family

My condolences go along with this message. I first met Masood some 22 years ago when he and his group in Ottawa were commissioned to do a project for us in RTP. It goes without saying under his leadership his team did a fine job. When he came to RTP he and I had reason to interact professionally a number of times. I last communicated with him in 1999 when he was in the UK. With his vast talent, knowledge and savvy he ascended quickly in the corporate world as we have all observed with admiration. He was obviously well respected and regarded. Many will miss him.

Masood Amca,

I have never met someone so strong, so intelligent, so full of life, and yet so modest as you are. I enjoyed our occasional conversations and I learned a lot from you about work, life, people. I regret that we couldn't find more time for them, there is so much more I could have learned from you. You are my favorite person in the whole triangle community, I will miss you.

Dear Semra,
As one of the many fortunate to work for and with Masood, I learned many things that have helped me in my life. The most important of these was about family and balance. His love for his family, his integrity and kindness were always evident. He will be greatly missed. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Semra, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to you and the rest of your family for the loss of Masood. Of all the managers I had throughout my career, Massod was one of the best. We worked together on many challenging projects at Nortel, and I remember especially our trips to London. Masood was a great man and accomplished a lot is his life.
