Tom and Family,
I am so sad you lost your wonderful son. You were such a mentor as our Special Education Director and I am sure you and your wife passed on many of your great qualities to your children, especially treating all with respect. I appreciated all your help then and send my condolences to all of Matthew's family members. Thinking of you and your family. Sincerely, Noreen Mullen

It's been many years, I do remember Matthew as a tyke. The obituary was wonderful.
August 21, 2018
As a former firefighter and Police Officer, I have seen some of the dangers and opportunities Matt had and excelled in doing. My wife and I were deeply saddened when we learned that Matt had been killed in an area of California that I had once been in.
God bless your family Matt, and thank you for your service. You will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to you and your dear family!

Dear Family of Matt:
"Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glint on the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle autumn rain. When you waken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of the quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die."
We send our comforting love to each of you. Thank you for helping us refocus on all that matters each day of our lives.

Was saddened to hear of Matt's passing. When I saw his picture I immediately remembered him from being class mates at Midway Elementary and Wasatch Middle school. Still has the smile I remember. I remember him being quiet but very polite and really nice. Losing a son is one of the hardest things I have endured in my life so sorry for your loss. Memories never go away. He was a great kid who turned into an even greater man. I was privileged to have known him as a child. My condolences to all of you.

Tom,
What a beautiful service that honored your son so well, it was so nice to hear of what a great man he is and the many acts of service and kindness he gave so many. As I watched his service today my thoughts went to you and Rose and what great parents you are to have such wonderful children. So many of the comments about Matt reminded me of what a great boss and leader you were at SLCSD Sp. Ed. Matt had two great examples to learn from. You and your family are in my prayers.

As soon as I saw Matthew's face I knew you were a
the family that my brother and I went to school with. I went to school with you Tom and my brother went to school with Jimmy. We went to Bishop Glass School in Glendale. Tom your son was a wonderful man and I watched some of the funeral today and when I saw you I knew it was the same family. You have not changed. The way everyone spoke about Matthew it was like they were speaking about you and your brother Jimmy. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.

Dom, I don't know if you remember me, but I worked with you and Matt at Salt Lake County Wildland 20 years ago, at the start of both your fire careers. I could not make it to the funeral, but wanted to tell you and Matt's family, how sorry I was to hear about this tragedy. I remember laughing, playing Frisbee and soccer, hiking and lots of good laughs with Matt. He still has the same great smile. I hope you find peace during this tough time. Anna Johnson Widerberg

I have always admired firefighters for their extraordinary courage to put their lives at risk to save the lives of their own community, even people they have never met. Theirs is a difficult, challenging, and dangerous job; yet they willingly go as duty calls. This is a true hero, and Matt was one of those. A true hero isn't measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart and Matt had a strong heart. He will be deeply missed. Thank you Matt for your noble and valiant service to your community. You are a true hero. My sincerest condolences go with his family at this difficult time. While his body may be departed, his spirit lives on and watches over his loved ones with gentle love, and eager anticipation for a grand reunion. God's speed dear friends.

A fireman knocked at the heavenly gate
His face was scarred and old
He stood before the man of fate
For admission to the fold
What have you done Saint Peter said
To gain admission here?
Ive been a firefighter sir, he said
For many many a year
The pearly gates swung open wide,
As Saint Peter touched the bell
Come in and choose your harp my son,
Youve seen your share of hell.
I dont know you Matt, but you are still my Brother. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. . A Fireman never really dies. They forever burn in the hearts of those they save. Matthew Burchett will burn in the hearts of us all!

I never met Matt, but worked with his father, Tom, for many years at the Park City School District. From what I have seen and read, Matt was cut from the same cloth as his dad ... he looked like him and was by all accounts just as wonderful a person. I am so very sorry and understand the pain and hurt first hand. I know that God comforts and sustains in the darkest of times and I pray that Matt's family will have that experience as well.

This morning my husband and II were talking about what makes a hero. Battalion Chief Burchett, your name came up.I didn't know you, but as a nurse I have worked with many firefighters. There's just something special about a firefighter. From what I've heard and read about you, Battalion Chief Burchett I know you are a special wonderful person. As a resident of Salt Lake County, I thank you and pray for you perpetual peace.
For your wife and parents and all who love you as a friend and brother, I pray that you are comforted by God, and by the knowledge that you are a shining star of a human being.
For your firefighting family, I hope you too will get peace and comfort over the next days, weeks, months and years. I hope "Matty" stories are told around fire department tables for a very long time.
To Matthew, I beieve you are being held in God's presence, under His sheltering Wings.I hope that you have comfort knowing how many people you have served over the years. Serving others is a gift and an honor, and you haved served us well. There are also many from California who are extending prayers and thanks to you.
Gospeed to you Matthew Burchett. Thank you.

"FINAL ALARM"
Rest now my fallen brother
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your breaking heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you've done your part
and now you've answered your last call
Rest knowing that in God we sought
Oh lord, watch over another who just fell
Rest assured your troubled thought
As we ring the final bell.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. My husband and I live in NW Montana in a forested area. Too many times we have had wild fires in our area. To us, fire fighters are angels on earth. It saddens me any time a fire fighter loses his life trying to protect others. We actually just sold our house in SLC to move to Montana 2 weeks ago, so your loss is special to us.

Dearest Burchett Family,
My heart aches for all of you. Matt, Rose, and Tom were a huge part of my childhood at St. Lawrence. Your family worked hard to give the rural Catholic kids a place to connect, have fun, and be inspired.

Sending your family love, light, hugs, and lots of prayers.
