Matty was a good friend and fellow soldier. He influenced the careers of many soldiers in the 133d Engr Bn. It's hard to believe he's been gone for 12 years.

Many comments about Matty's smile. My father loved working and laughing with him and my mother mentioned only 2 weeks ago "Every time I see Matty he has a smile for you. Every time." I was honored to have known this patriarch how ever briefly. My thoughts and prayers to the entire family. --Marty Joyce

For Matty, I once asked him to teach me this Irish prayer - now we say it for him:

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall softly on your fields
And until we meet again, May God hold
you in the hollow of his hand.

How we wish we could hear him say it again . . .

Matty Connolly was as large as life itself. I met Matty 34 years ago on the Portland waterfront and worked side by side with him for the last 24 years. His family has strong roots working on the Portland waterfront and it was in Matt's blood too. For so many there just was not enough longshore work to support a family so Matt went out and worked two or three jobs to take care of his family. He worked tirelessly as the Treasurer of The Portland Longshoremen's Benevolent Society ILA Local 861. He recieved no salary but brought his expert managerial expierience from working for the State of Maine for over 30 years to keep the union financial books in perfect order. Matt had a great sense of humor and if you did not recognize it immediately you would soon enough. I will miss the bellowing call of a man could scare the beJesus out you and as you jumped and turned around and found him laughing like anything at you. The entire membership of the Longshoremen's union will greatly miss Matt's wisdom, guidance, caring and friendship he provided us over the years. Matt was unique, passionate about life, a person with seemingly boundless energy. None of us, many much younger could keep up with him. He had the gift of gab and a wit unmatched.
Matt was a great friend to me and my family, and it is with much personal sadness that Myself, Anne and our family send our deepest sympathy to Lucia, Tommy, Barbara, Bob Sr. and Elizabeth and all the Connolly family.

Dear Lucy and family. Everyone who knew Matt shares a small piece of your very large loss. He was a most enjoyable and funny Irishman to work with in the 133 Engineer Battalion. Matt and I worked together in the personnel office for several years.
Warmest regards and condolences to all.

I could not ask for a better grandfather. He was always there with the best advice when I needed it the most. I'll miss his bear hugs and cuddling up on his recliner the most. I know he knows how much I love him which gives me some peace. I only wish I had more time... He will always have a big peace of my heart and never will be forgotten. He was such a good person and will give me something to live up to. I loved him so much and I will miss him. My heart goes to my grandmother right now because I know how much they did together. Grammy I'm sorry I cant be there in person but I'm there in spirit. Love u so much even though I'm so far.

God looked around His garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace be thine". It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn't go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.
