Dear Etzel Family,
I want to express my condolences on the loss of a fine son and brother. I was a substitute guidance counselor at HHS for one year during Matt's junior year. He stopped in the guidance office on numerous occasions just to chat or to seek some information re. careers and schools. I was always impressed by his sincerity. He was an extremely nice young man who got along with everyone. I'm sure he carried that on in his job of serving our country. I hope you find some peace in knowing he touched the lives of many people.

Dear Dr. and Mrs. Etzel,
I would like to extend my deepest condolonces for your loss. Although I've never served with or met your son, I am currently in the same career field in the Navy as he was. Over the stretch of my 19 year-plus career, which will be coming to an end within the next couple of months, I have served with some of the same people who served with your son. Much like him, I am a very avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and a product of the Alle-Kiski valley, having enlisted in the Navy a few months after graduating from Highlands in 1990. I will be holding a retirement ceremony in July. In addition to the departed members of my family, I would like to dedicate my ceremony to the memory of your son (with your permission, of course).
Sincerely,
Rachael Griggs

Matt was one of my great friends if not best friend in high school. I was new to our school my freshmen year and Matt was the first person who introduced himself to me and made me feel real comfortable in my new surroundings. I will never forget it. I feel so awful that him and I lost touch after we graduated. I've spoke to a few of our friends and after reminiscing about our high school days, it's really starting to hit me that he is gone and how truly missed he will be. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family. He will truly be missed.

Matt was a senior at Hampton when I was a freshman. We were cast in the Drama Club production of "God's Favorite" that year. I'll never forget how he took me under his wing and helped me through my first show. On more than one occasion, I've listed Matt's name as someone I looked up to growing up.
