So heartbroken at the loss of Matt. Memories have flooded my mind over the last week and I am so thankful I have them to cling to. Matt has always had a special place in my heart and always will.

Richard and Fran, my heart is so heavy for you and your family. Matt was a fine young man who I will always remember. I am grateful for his service to the country, I am grateful for his uprightness and character which he just embodied as a Marine, and I am grateful that I had a chance to know him. Maria and I are praying for all of you during this time.

May God's grace surround you during this time and give you comfort and strength.

I was so sad to hear of Matt's death. My son Michael Hagen who was friends with Matt in high school and served with him in the Marines gave me the news on Monday. I know your pain and grief as I lost my oldest son almost 3 years ago in what Iunderstand to be very similar circumstances. Even though you do not know me, I would consider it a privilege to talk with you in hopes of providing a listening ear and maybe help you sort out how you are feeling. Matt served under me through 3 deployments and was my right hand all throughout fast. When I was wounded in Afghanistan he was one of the first of my brothers to come see me. I would like to express my condolences to all who knew and loved him. I will always remember him as the one person in my life who always rooted me on after my accident. I was bed-ridden for months, and even though he was at our home to visit my family, he ALWAYS took the time to come check on me and encourage me. Many times I'd feel like giving up, but I'd always remember him, and all he'd been through, and keep going. He really did have a heart of gold, and this world is a much better place for him having been in it. Rest well, Goober...you will be missed.

Richard and Fran...We are so saddened and shocked to find out about Matt. This is the worst nightmare a parent can ever imagine. We know.....we have been there. My dear Fran....I Love you and your family and will try and get in touch with you soon. Love and Prayers.

To whom it may concern, I spoke to Mat for the first and only time a few weeks ago and was struck by his brutal honesty and desire to maintain his own integrity. Thus I looked forward eagerly to the time we could meet and talk more. I mourn with ya'll this week. I'll never forget being 14-15,and having a 15 year old friend that was 6ft 5,with a 80's style hair cut and afraid of bees. I'm sure that rope is still stuck in the gazebo in Eagles Nest neighborhood. Rest easy brother.

Matt was such a brave, handsome, kind, sensitive and loving son, brother, friend and father. You shared him with the world and we are grateful. His loss is unfathomable.

A True Hero and a Huge Loss To Many!

Matt, It was a true honor to have you as a dear friend. I will miss you so much! I remember you getting excited when the band played Fly Me Courageous. You always made me feel good when performing. I will never look at Simple Man the same again because of how you and I split the song and sang it together. You were a true good man with a Heart of Gold! WE lost a GREAT friend, a Hero to Many and a Blessing to all that had the Honor of Knowing You! I love you always.
