Matthew Grimson Obituary
March 9, 1968 - June 19, 2018.
He is survived and missed by his loving Mother, Katherine Cecilia Forrestall (Robert J. Russell), sister Kristin DeVany Grimson (Nicholas Sanford), nephews Samanari Sanford, Salybia, Dominica, Joric Sanford, St. Kitts and Nevis, step-brother Kerry Russell, uncle Tom DeVany Forrestall (Mary O'Reagan), aunt Mary Patricia DeVries (Nicholaas DeVries), aunt Carol (nee Grimson) Abbott (Frederick) many beloved cousins and friends. Matthew was predeceased by his Father Colin Donald Grimson, former head-master of the Halifax Grammar School, uncle, the Honourable John Micheal Curphey Forrestall (Marilyn), cousin John DeVany Forrestall.
Matthew was a well known singer-songwriter, musician who was a well known, respected, and loved part of the Halifax music scene since the early 1980s. His songs have been covered by Sloan and Joel Plaskett Emergency. Grimson was a very prolific songwriter whose work and spirit inspired many people in Halifax's music community, amongst a few include, Al Tuck, Chris Murphy, Erin Costelo and Joel Plaskett. Grimson died this week in Halifax, he was 50 years old.
In a few months, after reviewing Matthew's extensive catalogue, his family and friends are planning a musical tribute to Matthew and his music. Watch for it!

Well, words are never enough when this happens. I knew Matthew from childhood and the TO years and beyond. I always thought he was incredibly talented and a true individual to say the very least. He was quite the wordsmith with a Tom Waits like eye on the situation. I wish the family did not have to experience such a profound loss. Life is precious. Sail on Matthew. See you soon enough on the other side. Keep close watch on your moms......xo

I met Matthew in Halifax around 1988 and maintained a sporadic but close friendship with him through many moves and changes. He will always be one of the key influences in my life. He taught me so many things, not least that if you feel like writing and recording songs, you should just do it and not worry about how to make any money from them or get people to listen to them.
More of my favourite records, films, and books were introduced to me by Matthew than by anyone else. He was the most interesting person I've ever known and also one of the sweetest. I wish his combination of wild originality and innocent sincerity were more encouraged in this world. Every conversation with him expanded my mind and my heart.
We had started making some music together last November, with the idea of developing it into a much larger project. I was so glad to see him excited about the future and so honoured to be part of his creative process. Now that project will never happen and I feel just devastated. I loved Matthew dearly and will miss his beautiful soul. Condolences to his family and all the other people lucky enough to have loved him too.

Another memory of Matthew will stick with me for forever. I live in Scotland now but was back in Halifax for a visit in 2007 and spent a lot of time hanging out with Matthew. While I was back, he thanked me for a chat we had way back in 1986 or 87. Matthew had quite a noticeable stutter back then but he told me that what I told him all those years ago changed his life and helped him overcome his stutter. Now I couldn't for the life of me remember what I said to him but I didn't say that to him as it was obviously very meaningful. I wish I knew what it was I had said but I guess that doesn't really matter. What mattered was that I helped a true friend and Matthew was just that.
Matthew you'll keep on rockin' in the free world. Xx

MATTHEW you will always be remembered for your kindness, musical talent but most of all your ability to relate to people and put them at ease. I wish I could listen to you talk all night and watch the sun come up over Halifax Harbour one more time. Forever my friend.
