Matthew Kenny Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2024.
Matthew (Matt) Anthony Kenny passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024, surrounded by his family in Beverly, MA. He was born to Bridget Mary and Matthew Francis Kenny in New York City on March 18, 1953. Matt was an Irish baby (born the day after St. Patrick's Day, much to his Mother's dismay) and loved his heritage.

Although born in New York City, his family spent the majority of their time in Tenafly, NJ. As a student at both Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and Tenafly High School (1971 graduate), Matt made many lifelong friends. He eventually moved with his family to Kissimmee, FL in 1993. He grew to love Florida as much as New Jersey, but still relished coming home to see his family and to attend high school reunions.

Matt was a bartender for over 45 years and loved every minute he spent behind the bar. Whether he was crafting new cocktails or making new friends, Matt truly enjoyed his work. He worked at many restaurants and bars throughout the country, among them Fiddleheads in Closter, NJ, Walt Disney World Resort and The Palm Restaurant in Orlando, FL and many more. He also won awards for his bartending skills and cocktails from Bartender Magazine and was inducted into the Bartender Hall of Fame in 1993.

When not at work, Matt could be found listening to classic rock, golfing, or cheering on the Yankees and the Giants.

As everyone can attest to, Matt had the gift of gab. He was the life of every party and could always make you laugh. He was ever willing to buy you a drink and chat for hours.

Above all else, Matt was proud of his family. He brightened the lives of everyone he met and he will be deeply missed by those close to him.

Beloved father of Brittany Kenny Gomes and her husband George, Mariah Kenny, and Andrew Zwernemann and his wife Ivette. Loving grandfather (Baba) to Charlotte Gomes and Raquel and Andrew Zwernemann. Devoted brother to Marguerite Usher and Kathleen Neville and her husband John. Other loving family members include: Mitzi, Geoff, Sawyer, and Ava LaBarge, Melissa McIver, Brianna, Alex, Zoey and Logan Chia, and Brendan, Annie and Walker Neville. Matt was a legend to his family and his many friends. He was one of a kind.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 10, 2024 from 4:00-7:00 at Tommy Fox's Public House in Bergenfield, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please consider having a toast and saying "Cheers" in Matt's honor.

Matt was such a nice man. He would come into the Y where I worked and stop and talk to me at the desk. He always brought me a treat and asked me to hook his fit bit on his wrist. We shared a lot of stories, him being from the New York and New Jersey area, and me having family there. He will be missed. RIP

I knew him from the neighborhood, Little League, and I sat right in front of him in homeroom for four years in HS. A 'Character', if there ever was one.

Among the many great Matty memories:
Eighth grade - Matty and Rocco Mele were the referees for the Student/Faculty basketball game. Matty calls a foul on Mr. Brody. Brody wasn't happy. Now they're nose to nose screaming at each other, with Matty back peddling. Just when it seemed the student body couldn't get any louder, Matty blows his whistle in Brody's face, spins to the scorers table, and signals a 'T' (technical foul) on him. Fun-Nee. What a guy !

I knew Matty from the THS Class of '71. Here is a picture of him (far right) with some of his pals, at our 40th reunion in 2011. You could hear his laugh across the room.

May he rest in peace, and his family and close friends find comfort in their memories of him.

Rest in Peace MattMan. So many great memories from our time together in Florida. Generous, witty, kind and always good for a joke and laugh, are just a few things that made Matt the awesome man he was.

His flirtations back in Jr. high School. His getting busted by my Dad in the bushes in front of my house in Tenafly when I invited him to party with other friends after my parents left. His honest apology to my Dad, who liked him as much as we all did!
He was a very loyal and wonderful friend from the time we met and for always!

I knew Matty through the frolics of a neighborhood "gang" at a very young age. He on Jefferson and me on Delaney!! Reunited on the high school level, Matty always had a quick smile and his Irish eyes were always twinkling.
He will be missed by all his `71 classmates, including me, who continued to enjoy his spirited personality at class reunions that followed graduation.
My heart goes out to his children, grandchildren and siblings. I knew Kathleen throughout our years in Tenafly.
May he rest in peace and may you all find strength through your memories of Matty. Janet (Mase) Mason Leeson

We met Matt 20 years ago at The Palm in Orlando. Our friendship grew over a drink and much talk at that bar. He felt like family. The one thing he always shared with us over the years was his love for his daughters. We always got to see the latest pictures of his girls in their dance costumes. He was a very proud poppa . He will be missed.
Love you Matt Man
