Dear Lorrie, Chuck and family
Mike and I are sorry for the loss of Matt in your lives but he will forever be in your hearts.
I had the honor of knowing him through praying for him many years in our Moms in Touch prayer group and I know, just know, that God has always had Matt in His sights. Now he is even closer to Him and safe and out of pain.
Love you
Pauline and Mike

I am so very sorry. I remember Matt's comic strip that he published in the Oakland Press while he was still in high school. I was teaching at Pontiac Central High School at the time, and my students were impressed that I knew someone so famous. Matt was an important part of the "kid crew" on multiple family vacations to Jekyll Island, Georgia, and Up North skiing/snow boarding. I also remember the snowboarding mishaps, the fire works on the beach, the video game binges, and the meals the kids cooked for our theme nights. I try to watch and own the movies that Matt worked on. He accomplished a lot, and would have accomplished more, but the life he did have was full of activities, talent and love. I am so very very sorry.

Chuck, I pray your family will find strength in this time of loss, and may you rejoice in the memories, and good times shared. I was recently asked if I sit on a bench and converse with anyone who would I choose, and today I would choose Matthew. God Bless you, and yours.

Matt and my son Brian were best bud's. Kind of like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid always looking for trouble, and sometimes found it. Matt was "that" kid. The one who was at your house first thing ready to play and at night had to be told to go home. Of course not before my husband would say, "Kummer boy, you and Brian clean up that basement." We loved Matt, he was a part of our family. Many vacations included him, like skiing at Crystal Mountain or on our annual Easter trek to Jekyll Island. He would occasionally hit a tree snowboarding or get caught on the beach with Brian lighting fireworks but that was the fun part. We never knew what Matt would come up with next, always the creative, talented, upbeat, good hearted kid who we will miss terribly. We were so proud when he got to live his dream as an animator. We went as a group to see his first animated movie, Wreck-It Ralph," with him in the credits. When his name came on the screen we gave it a standing ovation. He told us once he was working on some girly movie, turns out it was "Frozen." He had no idea that it would be so popular. Yes, he had a talent which has a way to always be in our hearts.
Good bye Matt, we love you,
The Nancekivell's (his other family)

I have not met Matthew, but my best friend met him recently and briefly. We talked about their encounter, which means Matthew made a positive impression on my friend. He spoke of Matthew's gentleness and sense of humor despite being in physical pain at that moment.
I hoped to meet Matthew because of how my friend spoke of liking him. How very sad for all of you to be without him. I am sorry for you unimaginable loss. Perhaps you will take comfort in your memories of who he was and how he affected others. Or it may be that there is no comfort to be found for some time.
Sincerely,
Cheryl

I met Matt back in 2001 at Columbus College of Art and Design. He, along with my now husband, would hang out together. I have many drawings that he had made and we would all just laugh and have fun together. We also stayed with him when he lived in Florida and talked of coming to visit him out west. He was always such a blast and was such an amazing person. I am so sad that he is gone. Thinking of all of you. This is such a tragic loss for everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
