Dear Mr. and Mrs. La Porte and Family,

Though it has been five years since that fateful day on April 16, 2007, for one herself who has felt the deepest pain of grief and loss I know it is only yesterday for your family. As our Great Savior expressed it in John 15:13 - Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. The students that day were described as teenagers, but your son was truly THIS MAN Jesus spoke of and displayed it so greatly on that day. I am a friend of Senior Trooper Gary Chafin, and he has spoken to me of the great admiration he has for Matthew as a fellow soldier.

My prayers are always with you.

I wanted you and your family to know that your life story will continue to impact your fellow cadets both known and unknown. It did for me as the parent of a cadet. I hope your family has been able to find peace and joy once again. God Bless and take care of them.

Today, as most know, is the first anniversary of the day in Virginia that affected the lives of so many in its wake. On one level it is a wake-up call that mandates institutions to anticipate and deal properly with evolving technology and its consequencies. That said, may the lives taken in this tragedy have special meaning for us on this first anniversary day; may we never forget and may reason prevail.

La Porte Family,
Deeply Saddened For Your Lost.

Linda Favuzza - [email protected]

May 6, 2007

To Matt's family and friends,
Our heavenly father Jehovah (Ps. 83:18) promises at Isaiah 41:10 - "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not gaze about, for I am your God. I will fortify you. I will really help you. I will really keep fast hold of you with my right hand of righteousness." May you grasp hold of his hand and allow him to guide you through the coming days, weeks, months and years.
May you gain additional comfort from these promises:
Isaiah 25:8 - "He will actually swallow up death forever."
Revelation 21:4 - "and he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."
Since the loss of my husband on 9/11, I have been greatly comforted by the promises in the word of God.

To the La Porte Family:
I am so sorry for the loss of your son Matthew. His smile was so sweet it caught my attention. My son too goes to a military academy similar to Carson Long. It was the hardest decision of my life to send him away to this school and I pray everyday that he will grow up to be an outstanding young man like your son Matthew was and always will be.Please accept my deepest sympathy.
Sincerely,

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the sparkle in the snow.
I am the shredded leaves that blow.
I am the sunlight on growing grain.
I am the gentle summer rain.
I am the quiet bird at night.
Circling about; Taking flight.
So do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

To The La Porte Family:
I am writing this brief note to your family because I so deeply feel that when we are faced with the sudden loss of someone so very dear to us that it is one of the hardest things in our lives we will have to face. Yet, I would like to share with you something that touched my heart, it is the knowledge that God will respond to our persistent prayers to help us through any tough time such as this. At Philippians 4:6 and 7 it says that "the peace of God that excels all thought will guard your heart and your mental powers." Please know that my prayers are with you at this time and I urge you to continue to pray for strength to get through the rough moments ahead.

RISE UP SLOWLY, ANGEL

Rise up, slowly, Angel.
I cannot let you go.
Just drift softly midst the faces,
In sorrow now bent low.

Ease the searing anger,
Born in harsh unyielding truth
That Death could steal my loved one
From the glowing blush of youth.

Rise up slowly, Angel.
Do not leave me here alone,
Where the warmth of mortal essence
Lies replaced by cold, hard stone.

Speak to me in breezes
Whispered through the drying leaves,
And caress my brow with raindrops
Filtered by the sheltering trees.

Rise up slowly, Angel,
For I cannot hear the song
Which calls you through the shadows
Into the light beyond.

Wrap me in your downy cape
Of sunshine, warm with love,
And kiss a tear-stained mother's face
With moonlight from above.

Then wait for me at sunset,
Beside the lily pond,
And guide me safely homeward
To your world,which lies beyond.

Just spread your wings and take me
In reunion’s sweet embrace,
And we shall soar, together,
To a different time and place.

A brief moment of darkness
was all that I knew,
before Heaven's Gate
came into my view.

Loved ones and friends
I had missed for many years,
welcomed me with open arms
and many happy tears.

All the hurt, fear and pain
that I have ever known,
is gone from my life,
I am finally home.

I gazed upon the Lord's
sweet smiling face,
and for the first time in my life
I knew and felt His grace.

I know that you miss me,
but please dry your eyes.
I will always be watching and loving you
from my home in the sky.

A cool breeze on your face,
a touch of light rain,
I will send as a reminder
that we will be reunited again.

Life on earth is but one
brief moment in time,
I am finally home,
Eternity is mine.

Mr and Mrs P

April 27, 2007

Although from Earth, our loved ones are gone
They live in our hearts as time goes on
God truly blessed us with the time that we had
Though their departure leaves us very sad

"Time heals all wounds" We've heard it before
A broken heart gradually begins again to soar
God works miracles in His time, not ours
Not by our wishes, but by faith and prayers

By each person he claimed, we were given a gift
Wonderful memories for our spirits to lift
Reunions and Christmas, and simple every day fun
To carry with us always, until our work here is done

Thank God for Kodak, for video and audio-tapes
And for the time together that this family takes
The message is clear from those who have started life anew
"We're waiting in Heaven for each and every one of you"

Each one would say "Don't cry for me dear"
"This place is wonderful, I wish you were here"

Matthew La Porte was trouble at the start
Then ROTC he became a part
He gained many friends and just as man brothers
Airforce Special Operations Prep Team gave him a try
He did it all and finished on a list high
His toughness was physical and even mental
He was a leader with hint of gentle
Never complained about what had to be done
He had a sense of humor he was no stiff—he was fun
He played tricks with his mischievous spirit
He turned out better he had merit
Matthew the son, the friend, the leader who was good at what he did
For he’ll be remembered for his heart being in the right place—for being a good kid

To the La Porte family,
I am deeply sorry for your loss. Just know that you aren't alone in your sadness... a whole nation grieves with you. I only spoke to Matt through the internet and myspace, but he was a shining light in the dark. He always had a way to make you smile on your worst days. I am very sorry for your loss. I have experienced losses both anticipated and unexpected. When I was fifteen years old in my first year in high school, my mother died of melanoma at age 54 in December 2004; we were anticipating the loss. As with me, I am sure your loss is emotionally stressful for you and your family.

Your grief may ebb and flow. It has been said that each of us has this well deep inside of us that can be filled to the brim with grief. Every time we cry, we empty out some of the well. But the well fills again. The level of sorrow in your well may lessen as time passes, but it will never run dry. There will always be birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and those days when the well seems to fill to its brim again. Allow yourself time to remember and mourn. It is part of your healing. Grief is a continuing journey.

To the La Porte family,
I was deeply saddened to hear that your son was one of the victims in our Nation's tradedy. Just know that you do not mourn alone, we as a nation and the world mourn for your son and your loss. May God be at your side along with his angels, and guide you to take each day as it comes. In my heart I know Matthew is there by your side watching over you. May you remember all the good times, and try to laugh at the funny times. When the wind blows, when an eagle flies, when you see a butterfly sitting on a branch, its Matthew. Embrace life. I am so sorry for your loss. God Bless.

To the LaPorte family,
As a mother of one son who is an eighteen year old Jr. Army ROTC student, I have been deeply moved by the strength of character and wonderful accomplishments of your son. The photo of Matt just"stood-out" to me as I looked upon the photos of all those whose lives were lost that day. I felt very blessed to have learned more about his life on the website of Carson Long Military Institute. I have peace of mind that Matt is in Heaven right now enjoying the Presence of God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. May the"joy of the Lord be your strength" each and every day from this time forevermore. God Bless You.

In my prayers you will forever stay
Although we never met and I did not know you
This is a poem for you to say my adieu
It is a shame you can not be with us today
Due to everything that happened I am still in dismay
Now you are up in a better place
We will never forget your honor and grace
Please look over us, protect us from dangers
You are missed by your family and countless strangers
I wanted to let you know you are in the thoughts of many
Condolences and commiserations are aplenty
I bless your family hope they stay strong
In my thoughts they will always belong
I say to you and the other decease
I wish that you all rest in peace

This tragedy has most definatley opened up the eyes of many people, even in other states far from Virginia. Even my school in this little town we know as Roberta are buckling down and making sure that our schools are safer. It has opened up my eyes to all the possiblities at schools, here in Georgia, Virginia, and all over the world also. My condolences go out to all the friends and family of the victims. A letter from Heaven

My Dearest Mother, Dad,Priscilla,

Some things I'd like to say
but first of all to let you know
that I arrived okay.I'm writing this from Heaven
where I dwell with God above
where there's no more tears or
sadness, there is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy
just because I'm out of sight,
remember that I'm with you
every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you
when my life on Earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me
and He said "I welcome you.
It's good to have you back again,
you were missed while you were gone,
as for your dearest family
they'll be here later on.
I need you here so badly
as part of My big plan,
there's so much that we have to do
to help our mortal man."Then God gave me a list of things
He wished for me to do,
and foremost on that list of mine
is to watch and care for you.
And I will be beside you
every day and week and year,
and when you're sad,
I'm standing there
to wipe away the tear. And when you lie in bed at night,
the days chores put to flight,
God and I are closest to you
in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on Earth
and all those loving years,
because you're only human
they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry,
it does relieve the pain,
but remember there would be no flowers,
unless there was some rain.I wish that I could tell you
of all that God has planned,
but if I were to tell you,
you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain,
though my life on Earth is o'er.
I am closer to you now
than I ever was before. And to my very many friends,
trust God knows what is best.
I'm still not far away from you,
I'm just beyond the crest.
There are rocky roads ahead of you,
and many hills to climb,
but together we can do it
taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy
and I'd like it for you too,
that as you give unto the World
so the World will give to you.
If you can help somebody
who is in sorrow or in pain,
then you can say to God at night
my day was not in vain. And now I am contented
that my life it was worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way
I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody
who is down and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up
as on your way you go.
When you are walking
down the street
and you've got me on your mind,
I'm walking in your footsteps
only half a step behind.
And when you feel the gentle breeze
or the wind upon your face,
that's me giving you a great big hug
or just a soft embrace.
And when it's time for you to go
from that body to be free,
remember you're not going,
you are coming here to me,
And I will always love you
from that land way up above.
Will be in touch again soon.
P.S. God sends His Love, I will always LOVE YOU!! Matt

I am so sorry for your loss. I have reason to believe that your son acted heroically trying to protect his fellow classmates. My prayers are with you.

Today is Memorial Day in Israel and as we mourn all of our fallen sons, I will say a special prayer for this fine young man.
May he rest in peace and may you never know sorrow.
May is death be the last senseless death of any of our sons.

Father we entrust our brother Matthew to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Matthew in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

It's so terrible that something like this can still happen in the year 2007...
You will forever be in the world their prayers, their thoughts, their heart!

I did not know you or your family. But I don’t believe there is a person in the world whose heart has not been touched by this tragedy. There is nothing in this life that brings us more sorrow than to lose loved ones in death. Even harder to bear is when the lives of loved ones are lost due to an unexpected tragedy. The shock can be overwhelming.
Be assured that God promises that he…”is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalms 34:18) Nothing can bring us more peace of mind than the inspired words of… the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulations. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) Take comfort and solace in the Bible's message as we all await the time when GOD…” will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:3,4)

My family and I are saddened by your tragic loss. Although I can't imagine the pain your are feeling now, I share in your pain. May God give you the strength to go on and welcome Matt into his resting place.
