MATTHEW LEIBOWITZ Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2016.
LEIBOWITZ MATTHEW, age 65, passed away as a result of complications of cancer on February 24, 2016, in Miami, Florida. Matthew is survived by his sons, Brandon and Ryan Leibowitz, his sister, Rita Hurwitz, and his mother, Hennie Leibowitz. Matthew was born in Great Neck, New York on November 12, 1950 to Jerry and Hennie Leibowitz. He graduated from Syracuse University and University of Miami Law School. Matthew, an accomplished communications attorney, was the founder and principal of Leibowitz & Associates, P.A., where he worked for nearly 35 years. His work focused on communications and telecommunications and he specialized in complex broadcast issues such as foreign ownership and network TV affiliations. He was known by his family, friends, and colleagues as a kind, creative individual who would not take "no" for an answer. He was an avid boater and sailor, loved the companionship of his labradoodle, Abby, and enjoyed politics, having been involved in many local, state and national elections. His final wishes specified that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to either Big Brothers Big Sisters or to the American Cancer Society. Service will be held TODAY, Friday, February 26th at 11:30 am at Temple Emanu-El, 1701 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. Arrangements by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert (305) 865-2353

All who went to Great Neck North remember Matty as a warm and consummate leader. Way too young to be gone.

Just learned of Matt's passing. He was a friend to all, a great lawyer, and a strong smile and sense of humor. We served on the board of the FAB together; he was my broadcast lawyer at a number of companies that I led and was always responsive, creative, bright.....and often brutally honest...which sometimes is needed. He'll be holding court for sure in Heaven and it will be a good home for him.

I knew Matty for as long as I can remember and was fortunate to be able to visit with him last month. I will miss his endless energy, inquisitive and thought full mind, and our friendship. My thoughts go out to Hennie, Brandon, Ryan, Rita and the others who considered Matty a friend.

So very sad to learn of Matt's death. He was a leader to all of us at GNN and his passing leaves so many of us, his high school classmates, feeling his loss.

Having met in 7 th grade - And reconnected at our reunions - throughout the years - I am deeply saddened to learn of Matt passing. Remembering the wonderful childhood times together from class elections to Saturday cheerleading at football games. A genuine person who made those around him feel good about themselves. He leaves a lasting memory. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

To the Leibowitz family and friends of Matty,
I fondly remember Matty as a teenager in high school, the president of our Great Neck North class. I was secretary of the student council and had the opportunity to work with him. So long ago, but I still can envision his fabulous smile, warmth and leadership. He was a very special person, and I know this a huge loss to the many who loved him and were touched by him. This childhood friend sends deepest sympathy.

I did not know very well. But well enough that when you were President of the GO Great Neck Senior High, I knew then you will become a great asset to society. God Bless you and your whole family. Rest in Peace.

Mortality hit me like a bolt of lightening when I heard that Matty's had passed. We lived across the street from each other on Fir Drive, taking the bus to school everyday since Kindergarten. He was my first friend. I remember that his entire family were always warm and inviting. I can't tell you how many cookies I had after-school at his house, I only wish we had keep in better contact. My fondest memories of Matty are etched into my mind forever.
