Words can't begin to describe how much I and many of my friends and teammates miss Matt. He was always a great kid with a great heart and a love for the game of hockey. Dear McCarthy Family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Words of sympathy do not seem nearly enough during a time of such grief. Though we have not met, except for a brief hello in passing, we are neighbors. If there is anything we can do at any time, please do not hesitate to call on us. Your family, Matt's friends, and teammates are all in our thoughts. We pray for your strength and that in time you are able to find comfort in the memories of his special life.

To the McCarthy Family:
We are all deeply sadden and shocked by Matt’s sudden death. A young man taken from us in the prime of his youth is very hard to understand. We remember as a young hockey player he was full of energy and good spirit running around the Rinks in Exeter. The next couple of weeks will be very difficult and we want you to know that Matt and your family are in our prayers. Ryan and Nate, you have a great older brother that will never be forgotten.

Jola, Jim, Ryan and Nate, we were shocked to hear of Matt's tragic death, we met when he and Kyle played on the Metro's. Matt was always happy and Kyle so much enjoyed skating with him and he still smiles when he talks of all the fun times both on and off the ice they shared while traveling with the Metro's. As you remember we lost are oldest son at the age of 18 who also was a hockey player, I can say to you that it is hard, the emptiness sometimes is unbearable but what gives us strength is Ryan's memory and his love he remains with us each and every day. Matt will always be with you- hold onto that smile-hold onto his love and hold onto each other. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I just have driven by the Sacred Hearts Church and witnessed the respect given to Matthew today by the hockey players lined up on each side of the walkway. It is a terrible reality check, but know that your son has given this to me, that in my life I am very lucky no matter what. My heartfelt sympathies are with you and your family at such a tragic time.

Matt was a great childhood friend. He was always full of laugh and big hugs. I'll never forget the times we shared and the games we played. Rest in Peace Matt. To Jim, Jola, Ryan, and little Nate I can not find words to discribe what your going through but our prayers are with you.

January 2, 2010

Dear McCarthy Family,

We are sorry to hear about the loss of your son. As a family, we are praying that the comfort of the Lord would strengthen you during this difficult time. As 1 Peter 1:24-25 states, "All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever." This passage is saying that although we all must face death, God and His Word is both living and true. Although it was God's will for Matt to be taken at this time, trust in the Lord with all your heart to be strengthened by Him in this time of need. May the Lord always bless you!

In Christ,

No one should have to endure such pain. Matthew has the face of an angel and from what I have read about him he lived his life as one. God Bless him and all of his family.

I am one of the lunch ladies at Pentucket High. Matt was a popular boy and very polite. Pentucket is a tightly-knit school and I know the atmosphere in school will be solemn without him. I pray for Matt's family and friends at this time of such sorrow. ... Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen
