Matthew Miller

I am in shock, and just belatedly getting the news today August 30th, 2016.
Matt was a lovely lovely sweet guy who charmed me along with so many others...
Had he become a Head at another program
back in the post Lville days we planned that I would join him there.I would have followed him anywhere.
A piece of him will be with all of us and
I am so thankful I knew him. He represented the best example acroos the board,as a human being a scholar and a coach, let's do our best to emulate him.

I went looking for the Matt Miller I knew at the Lawrenceville Squash courts and found this! My deepest symnpathies to the Miller family! His zest for life and generosity of spirit make him a tough act to follow! I was, briefly, the Lawrenceville Squash Coach after he left!

No one is surprised by the great accomplishments Matt achieved in his career. All of us from Red Lion know he would do great things. My thoughts and prayers are with Matt's family.

Matthew Miller was housemaster of Kennedy House at Lawrenceville and loved house football and its traditions and history. House football at the Lawrenceville School started in the 1880s and the Hamill House became our archrival in 1947. It was a fun, competitive intramural tackle football league. Middle linebackers were 145 pounds and were destined for Amherst or Stanford, not for athletics, but for their academic prowess. It was a sport that normal sized boys could play. The night before the Hamill game each year Matthew and associated faculty members supervised a Kennedy pep rally in the house living room. Speeches were made. Oaths recited. Solemn pledges of victory taken. Chants and cheers could be heard several hundred yards across campus. I witnessed a few and spoke at one. I will never forget them. On Thursdays (house football game day) each autumn Matthew encouraged the boys to wear their Kennedy House ties and blazers around campus. Kennedy players wore their football game jerseys to classes. The coaches wore their Kennedy ties as well. I have not coached a house football game since 2004. Each October and November I still find myself looking for my Kennedy tie on my tie rack on Thursday mornings. Matthew Miller's influence for sure. Clearly, I could go on. There are many memories of push up contests, lacrosse glove boxing matches, tag team wrestling matches, and mini rugby matches - all in the Kennedy House living room and either organized or refereed by Matthew Miller. Something fun was going to happen if Matthew was around. He will be missed.

My deepest sympathies to Susan and Matthew's family. When Matt interned for me at the York Chamber and we played tennis, probably 1990, he had such big dreams. He fulfilled those that he shared with me and went on to fulfill so many more. In my mind, he will be forever young, and will live on through all of the people and especially students he touched.

A great man. I am reminded of these lines from Gatsby: He smiled understandingly much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced or seemed to face the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey. Atque in perpetuum frater ave atque vale.

I was overcome with sadness when I heard of Matthew's passing. Justne, Mia, Sophie and Grayson- he spoke so lovingly and proudly of you all! One of my childhood memories of Matthew is his pledge to learn a new word each day and to use it in conversation. Always a scholar! It warms my heart to know that he not only got to do what he loved in this life, but he that was able to share it with others!

So sorry to hear of Matt's passing! He was part of our tennis circle of friends in high school. We had great times playing tennis and hanging out together! He always talked about becoming a college professor and loved philosophical conversation even back then. Praying for all of his family during this difficult time!

My deepest condolences to the family. Matt had a good soul and a caring smile that he wasn't afraid to share. It seems only yesterday we were waking the halls at Red Lion, enjoying life and being kids. Matt will certainly be missed.

My memories take me back as though it were yesterday, we lived a few houses away growing up, we played together and I remember he would always swing with me at Nitchey Field & walk me home. He will forever be my friend & have a special place in my heart for him. My deepest sympathies are shared with his mother Sue, Justine and of course to his family that I did not know. Mr Miller was a good man, I am so sorry for this tremendous loss.

Matt and I shared a lot of life lessons, good times and played some "tolerable" tennis together :) during our formative high school years. Anyone that knew him is better off because of it. My heartfelt congratulations to Matt for a life well lived, and my deepest sympathies to those that knew and loved him.

A successful and smart man, a role model for the entire Park Tudor community. Your "good morning", smiles around the campus and dedication in all you did was outstanding and will for sure be missed! I will keep your family in my prayers, rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Matthew. May God comfort you in this time of loss. I got to know Matthew in high school in Red Lion and he was a good person. May he rest in peace.

A great man, educator, leader, husband, and father. You touched the hearts and minds of countless individuals. I thank you personally and my prayers are with your family.

Mathew made everyone he knew at school feel and know how much he cared personally. We had so many more special times to share......how very sorry we are for Sophie, Grayson, Mia and his beloved dog, Pepper. Mia, Sophie & Grayson, we have been struggling to think of something to say to comfort you and ease your pain. We finally realized that there simply are no words. What we can say with confidence is, Matthew was such a wonderful, strong, brave, and inspiring man! We hope that the love of family, friends, and the happy memories of Matthew can sustain you through these impossibly sad times. Matthew touched so many people in his lifetime. I am so lucky to have known Dr. Miller. Every time I saw him he brightened my day. He will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Miller, Sophie and Grayson-- you are all such strong people.

I feel blessed that I got to know him over the last couple years, meeting him in Atlanta at a Park Tudor event and then seeing him over the past 2 race weekends. He always had a good word to say and a positive attitude. God Bless you Matthew, you will be greatly missed.
