Matthew Arthur Carl Zapf passed away on August 31, 2024. He was born on August 26, 1988 in Chicago, IL to Matthew and Christine Zapf. Matt was raised in Peoria and Winnetka, IL with his four siblings, who he dearly loved. He studied neuroscience and attended medical school in Chicago before moving to Nashville for his medical residency. Here he met his wife, Melissa. Together, they made their home in Nashville and joyfully welcomed their son, Arthur.

Matt was strong, passionate, and brilliant. More importantly, he was truly good and kind. A devoted husband, father and friend, Matt cared deeply for the people in his life and actively avoided recognition.

Matt was an intensely curious person who loved to learn and experience and share with those he loved. Matt loved metal music: he studied every sub-genre, learned to play the guitar, owned dozens of metal t-shirts, extolled the virtues of a "mosh pit" to anyone who would listen, and took many of his people to countless shows so they could share in the experience (sometimes unwillingly). His passions and hobbies proliferated over the years - music, football, cooking, gardening, board games, gold-panning, reading, fishing, hiking, camping, and countless others. His love of the Chicago Bears was lifelong, and he didn't jump ship to a winning franchise even after marrying into a Kansas City family. Nothing made Matt happier than sharing what he loved with those he loved, and he had a gift for making the simplest things feel special.

Matt was fiercely generous. He volunteered for the "COVID Airway Team" as an anesthesiology resident, then gave away any respirator masks he had to friends he thought needed them more. He gave away thousands of dollars to his favorite restaurant and metal band during this time, trying to keep them afloat through the pandemic. He bought two of his favorite winter coats and gave one away to a stranger on a street corner who looked cold. He adopted the saddest rescue dogs he could find and made them extraordinarily happy. You'd be hard-pressed to leave the Zapf home without Matt handing you a book he thought you'd like and a handful of tomatoes from his garden.

Matt understood that life does not happen on its own. The life of an idea, a genre, a family, a garden...it happens because someone is intentional with their time, energy and investment to grow it. Matt saw his family and friends as part of his extended garden. He took the time to listen, support and help them grow. This came in many forms: he would help puzzle through challenges, offer a sympathetic ear, and send random gifts in the mail without signing his name. He shared his (sometimes strong) opinions when asked (and sometimes, when not), and he was fiercely in your corner when you needed him.

Most of all, Matt loved his people. Matt and Melissa met during residency and quickly fell for each other. Melissa was his partner, his friend and his love. Matt was not without his faults, and he was a better person because of Melissa. The couple supported each other through the peaks and valleys of medical training, the Nashville tornado, and the pandemic that followed. They traveled together: skiing down dozens of mountains, hiking across the Smokies, and visiting friends and family.

This April, Matt found his truest passion and purest joy: fatherhood. His son, "Art," was the light of Matt's life. The memory of Matt will carry on in the people who love his son.

Matt is survived by his wife Melissa; son Arthur; parents Matthew Sr. and Christine; siblings Brian (Carolyn), Terry, Patricia, and Caitlin; the McKittrick Family Richard, Beverly, Sarah (Chris), Christa (Tucker), Andrew (Lindsay); and dogs Cody and Pele.

A celebration of life will be held later this month. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to the charity of your choosing or Arthur's college fund (via Art's code C5D-E6B at the website https://www.ugift529.com/). For those who feel comfortable, we are also collecting letters to teach Art about his dad, with more info on this at lettersforart.com.

Wow, I was so shocked to learn of Matt's passing. I knew him as a medical student at Loyola. He was an outstanding student, researcher and most importantly, person. Two things about Matt: He presented a research project at the premiere American academic surgery meeting. At the close of his talk, the head of surgery at UC San Diego stood up and publicly offered Matt a residency spot! And, our research effort ultimately was branded as OnetoMAP with M being Matt. I will always remember Matt as a wonderful man, thoughtful, humble, innovative, smart, kind and capable. Words alone cannot convey my sorrow at his death and my deepest sympathies for his entire family. Paul Kuo

I´ll never forget the three months that we had the privilege of Matt staying with us in Australia. He was like a big brother to me (despite being two years younger). I cherish the memories of watching Bad Santa and the Ali G Show with Matt, I can still hear his infectious laugh. He introduced me to Pearl Jam´s back catalogue, which I´m grateful for. We hit the gym together - and despite buying Mass Gainer, Matt returned home lighter. Our trip to The Great Barrier Reef was made so much more enjoyable with his presence. I will forever cherish the memories of those precious three months that Matt came into our lives. Rest in peace big brother!

My family were SO blessed to have Matt live with us for three months when he came to Australia on exchange with my sister Olivia.
I seriously thought I was the coolest girl in high school, walking to and from school with "that cool American guy!"
I remember our family trip to the Great Barrier Reef and how he absolutely dominated shot put at the school athletics carnival and broke a school record! I remember Matt laying on the living room floor watching Tom Green and laughing (I can still hear that laugh too). I remember how Matt played for the school rugby team and went to watch a Sydney Swans AFL game. I remember climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge with him. Most importantly, I remember that big bear hug of his!
Thank you to the whole Zapf family for sharing your son/ brother with us for those three months and the profound impact you all had, particularly Matt, on my sister Olivia. I am forever grateful to have known Matt. We will look for signs from you all the way in Australia.

I was lucky and blessed to have been paired up with Matt for the New Trier/Pittwater Exchange Program.
Having been on such a unique journey and experience together, Matt quickly became my American brother and to this day am so incredibly grateful to the Zapf Family for opening their arms to me. My American Family.
I will cherish the moments and memories forever.
Love and hugs to the Zapf-McKittrick Family from Sydney, Australia

The scene is the Casey Family Reunion in Michigan. I had a bad case of the hiccups, and for an hour I was trying every old remedy in the book but nothing was working. I vividly remember very being in the kitchen in line for a build-your-own taco dinner. Cousin Matt and I are next to each other and he very casually asks me if I had any books I was reading. I say yes and tell him the title of the book that Bette gave me. He immediately follows up with seemingly random and intensely specific questions. What is the main characters last name? What color are his eyes? What´s your favorite part of the plot? I was not at all prepared to be quizzed on this book I read a few weeks ago so I really had to think critically to answer the questions. I remember the way in which he asked me these questions so intensely, maintaining eye contact and demanding my full attention. Cousin Matt was oddly really interested in this book, I thought to myself. After about 10 minutes of answering these seemingly endless quiz questions, Matt stops talking to me very abruptly, picks up his plate off the counter, and as he is turning away from me says "That books sounds cool, oh and by the way your hiccups are gone." He didn´t care about the book at all, he was just trying to help me get rid of my hiccups. I always guessed that this tactic was something he learned in school when studying Neuroscience, and it worked like a charm. Instead being so focussed on my hiccups he forced me to shirk my attention to all the details of this random book. Since then, I have tried this tactic on my friends when they have the hiccups, but I can never pull it off the way he did.

I worked with Matt at the sim
lab at Evanston before medical school. He was bright and so passionate about medicine. He took every opportunity to learn and to be ready for medical school. We went on a medical mission to Honduras and he jumped in and helped in every way he could
He made me laugh everyday that our paths crossed. I was so sad to hear this awful news.

To know a Zapf is to be loved, cared for, thought of, and seen. Matt and everyone in his family embodies this wholly. The world is a better, stronger, brighter place because of Matt's presence here, and his quirks, qualities, light, and glow will indeed be seen in his family and friends over time. Thinking of his loved ones in many ways -- especially Melissa, Baby Art, Matt's incredible parents, and his sempiternally loving siblings. How lucky and blessed are we to have such beautiful stories, memories, and moments to reflect and think happily on. Sending love, prayers, and light.
