Mattie Virginia Guettner Scarbrough

Mattie Virginia Guettner Scarbrough, a longtime resident of Kingston, made her final journey to her heavenly home Thursday, March 23, 2017, at The Lantern Alzheimer's Center of Excellence in Lenoir City.
Virginia was born Oct. 5, 1928, in Roane County, the daughter of Thomas Oscar and Mollie Eva Robinette Guettner. She was happily married to Calvin A. Scarbrough on April 10, 1955. He preceded her in death Aug. 24, 2012. Virginia retired from Y-12 Nuclear Plant in Oak Ridge after 32 years of clerical work in their medical department. After retirement, she was employed by The Michael Dunn Center, Calhouette Children's Residence in Kingston. Mrs. Scarbrough served faithfully in her home church until the latter years, when the struggles of age and dementia made this more difficult. Through the years many were blessed by her love and willingness to lend a hand, regardless of the size of the task. She influenced the lives of many children, though she was blessed with none of her own. In her latter years, she spent the majority of her time with family and tirelessly working in her yard. She was a woman of many talents, and her legacy will remain in the hearts of many for years to come. In addition to her husband, Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Margaret Pearl; and brother, Thomas Lloyd Guettner.
She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Wiseman; four nieces and nephews; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; 11 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; special friends and neighbors, Kyle and Mary Beverly and their children.
The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at Fraker Funeral Home, Kingston, with funeral service following at 8 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Kyle E. Beverly officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Monday, March 27, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Johnston Valley Road, Kingston, for graveside service.
