Dear cousin Mattie Carol
What a great loss to our family. How can I forget your great smile and that great big personality of yours. You could light up a whole room with your energy and never ending conversations. Your bubbly presence and seeing you at family reunions was always a joyful time. Your faith you wore proudly and was undeniable.
You will be missed cousin but never forgotten, we held you in our arms for a little while, but we will hold you in our hearts forever.
Sleep pretty my cousin, see you on the other side.
Love you
Patricia Allen

Our parents relocated to Cleveland from Omaha in the early 1950s, shortly after Carol was born. "Donnie and Mattie Carol were always the cutest kids," according to our 97-year-old aunt Margaret. (Said to me during a brief visit with her a few months ago). "Reflecting, I, LaDonna, realized memories and how Carol was always there for each of us. Carol and I always made our way back to each other over time as sisters in our unique way that may have been hard for others to understand. When children don't receive the tools to learn how to agree to disagree, days turn into weeks, and weeks turn into years. Often, we would stop speaking to each other altogether, but somehow, someway, we knew we could always find our way back into each other's lives. 'Separation consciousness" often kept us apart, and we began to see this pattern developing among the girls in our family over the years. Our mother was a single parent (after our father left us). We understood that she gave us the best she could with the tools given her. Yet, now that we know what it is, we (Toy and me) plan to change things that no longer serve us as a family. Our job was to identify, fix, or throw the broken tool away.
Mattie Carol was always diligent, professional, and hard-working in her career as a secretary and a real-estate agent. She worked for AAA for several years and encouraged and touched many lives along her journey. Developing her consulting firm (Barrach Solutions) was one of her most significant accomplishments as a business entrepreneur. She believed in the Lord and found strength spiritually as she lived her life devoted to her faith.
By 2010 she had joined our nonprofit as its acting consultant and secretary. She was marching alongside me, protesting in its annual Mother/Daughter Day of Remembrance on Imperial Avenue and participating in its programs and services.
She was always grounded and determined to receive her doctorate in religion as a minister and divine divinity. And she did, as Dr. Minister Mattie Carol Shaw D.D.
I tell you all that it's safe to love, forgive, and let go. There is no acknowledgment of time in heaven; it only exists here. Thank you, Sis! Your passing has shown us; that we can only live in the present; said LaDonna.
"We love you, Carol; love never dies. I miss you greatly already." Said sister Satoya (toy).
The family hopes you will join us for "A Sister's Love- A Celebration of Life."

My sister has left this physical world, may you rest in peace. I will miss you dearly. You always had faith in me when I didn't have any in myself. You kept me close during my darkest times, you continued to encouraged me and you never lost the optimism and hope that I would overcome. Thank you for your love, I love you and my life will forever be different without you!

Your little sis,
Toy
