Maureen Sweeney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 22, 2012.
Maureen O'Donnell Sweeney passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on March 21, 2012.
Born in Malden, Massachusetts on October 25, 1936 to the late Elizabeth (Lily) and John (J.J.) O'Donnell, Maureen was raised in Houston, Texas, from the age of two. She worked while attending Pasadena High School. After graduating in 1954, Maureen continued to work in various positions until she married the love of her life, Russell Patterson (Pat) Sweeney, Jr., in 1959. Together they moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where Pat attended graduate school at M.I.T. They returned to Houston in 1961, where Pat began his architectural career while Maureen focused on family, giving birth to four children.
As her children reached school age, Maureen launched a career spanning the next 30 years that impacted not only her and her family, but pioneered a unique business model that allowed professional women to discover their own fashion sense. Maureen opened her first boutique, Secondhand Rose, in Bellaire, Texas, in 1976. To move beyond her resale collection, Maureen established Raspberry Rose, a contemporary retail store, which provided her the opportunity to offer lines of clothing that expressed her personal relationship to fashion, bringing her dream of customized retail to fruition. In 1983, she relocated to the Rice Village, where Raspberry Rose thrives today and continues to be a place where women come together to enjoy fashion and friendship. Maureen served as president of the Women's City Club, an organization of female leaders and entrepreneurs in Houston. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Houston. She also offered her time to many other charitable organizations.
Maureen is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Pat; children, Erin Sweeney; John Sweeney; Todd Sweeney and wife Bonnie; Carrie Schwartzenburg and husband Kirk; grandchildren, Henniel, Daviel, and Viomarie (children of Todd and Bonnie); Luke and Natalie (children of Carrie and Kirk); her siblings, James O'Donnell and wife, Betty Jean; Jack O'Donnell; Arlene Baranda; Rose Licce; Betty Sprouse and husband, Richard; sister-in-law, Jean Dula and husband, Norman; brother-in-law, Mike Sweeney and wife, Corri-Sue; brother-in-law, Jerry Sweeney and wife, Ya. Maureen is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at a visitation on Sunday, March 25, at 5:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary service at 6:00 p.m. at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale St., Houston, TX 77023. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 26, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX 77025. A reception will immediately follow in the church reception hall (MJFC). The burial will follow the reception at 2:30 p.m. at Forest Park Lawndale. Please consider a donation to Sheltering Arms Day Center, 3838 Aberdeen Way, Houston, TX 77025, in lieu of flowers.

Pat,
We just heard through Mary Onstead about losing Maureen. What a tough time for you and the family. Maureen came into my life back in the resale days and I was totally taken by her the moment I met her. Never could I have hoped to be the fashion statement that she was but she tried her hardest to push me to my limit. She and my Mom bonded as they were both gifted with a true sense of fashion drama.
That gorgeous face was such a delight to see whenever I came back into town. We love you so much and are thinking of you in this, the toughest of times.
Glen and I both are hoping that friends and family can help you now.

When I think of Maureen I feel a sadness that she is gone but I also feel so inspired and empowered by the person she was. She just had this intriguing presence that made you want to get to know her. I can't say enough nice things about Maureen..she was kind, funny, young at heart, generous, interesting, wise and so fashionable (no one could pull off Maureens look but Maureen)! She loved her family and lit up around her grand babies. I cherish every memory of her and think about her every time I wear one the bracelets I bought there. I told her often I wished she was my mom cause who wouldn't want a mom like that!

Much Love,

We moved to Houston 26 years ago and Maureen was the first friend I met. She made sure that I would look right on my new job. We were the same age, had the same age children. We could talk for ever. Over the years, my husband counted on her for my birthday and Christmas gifts. Her spirit, enthusiasm, wonderful eye for the right thing was a joy for us. I loved to go to the store to be with her. Our love to all of her family through this enormous loss. We will all miss her.

Maureen holds a very special place in my heart and is a part of so many treasured memories; she will never be forgotten. Through the years, she has been there for all the milestones and she always made sure I was dressed well and accessorized for each of them: prom, high school graduation, college, and my wedding. She was one of the first to visit after the birth of our son, and was always caring and generous in difficult times as well. She did so much for others, her legacy and spirit will continue in those she touched.
Much Love,

To Carrie and the entire family--Maureen was a treasure. Coming into Raspberry Rose felt so comfortable, with her bright smile to greet you. Her fashion advice was always right on. I aspired to "be" Maureen, classy but always "au courant" with the trends of the time. I had complete trust in her. She had warmth, style and grace. She will be missed.

First let me say that my heartfelt thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to Pat Sweeney, Arlene Baranda and Jack O'Donnell and their families and close friends in their loss of Maureen.

I graduated from Pasadena High School with Maureen, Arlene and Jack in 1954. Pat and I are both Architects and as such have had not only a professional friendship but a personal relationship for about 50 years. Pat and Maureen were close friends and neighbors in Bellaire/Meyerland and we spent a lot of our early years together socially.

Maureen was a beautiful lady who was sweet and caring to everyone. She was very smart and inventive with her fashion, clothing and successful business ventures. She was loving and devoted to her children, family and especially devoted to Pat.

She will be missed as she passes into Heaven and there will be no more earthly pain or worries for Maureen. God Bless and Rest her Soul. R.I.P. Maureen....

Maureen was a one of a kind, incredible lady- kind, current, and fun to be with. Tim and I were priviledged to spend many wonderful Memorial Day weekends in Kerrville with Maureen and Pat. I have missed Maureen and know that she is in heaven with the family and friends who have gone before her.

I am holding all of the Sweeney and O'Donnells in my heart. Maureen was a large part of my life - present at my wedding, the birth of my daughter, my father's funeral - sharing so many life events with me. My recent, favorite memory were the car rides to the Texas Hill Country each year to share Memorial Day weekends with a special group of friends. We solved the problems of the world on that 4 hour drive each year. Such a personality, a creative soul...
I love her.

Maureen changed my life, lending her flair and encouraging me to develop my own. I have missed her deeply and loved her greatly. My heart goes out to Pat and the rest of her family. A very brilliant light is missing from all our lives.

Sending my condolences to all of the O'Donnell and Sweeney family. My first memory of Maureen is a picture of her and my mom, Sara Neff Price, in their bathing suits at Galveston Beach! They were 17 or 18 years old and they were both beautiful! I have heard many stories about the adventures of Sara, Maureen, and Arlene. I hope that my friendships will last a lifetime, just as theirs has! It is difficult to say goodbye to our loved ones, but we can look forward reuniting with them as our time comes....just as Maureen, Sara, and their parents have. Love to you all! Lori Price Kalain
