Maureen Vinge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 23 to Aug. 24, 2008.
VINGE, Maureen 1946-2008 Maureen Vinge was a passionate educator, a loving mother and wife, and a tremendously compassionate human being. In a career spanning 40 years, she devoted herself to effecting change in the world of education, ensuring that generations of children would be fostered in caring, challenging, inquiry-based learning environments. On August 15, 2008, advanced cancer defeated an indefatigable and resilient woman. Maureen enjoyed success as a teacher, principal, consultant and teacher trainer in over a dozen countries on five continents. In Edmonton, she taught at the U of A and Grandview Heights prior to becoming a leading administrator at Riverdale, Glenora and Strathcona schools. From 1999 to 2004 she served as Head of Lower School at the Charlotte Country Day School in North Carolina, where her presence is still felt today. Maureen was a leader in the development and expansion of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program around the world. As a workshop leader and master teacher she always modeled best educational practices. Friends and colleagues remember her generosity of spirit, her modesty, her confidence, her ability to speak clearly with honesty and courage, her vision, her energy and her passion for all things that make life beautiful. Her husband Don and son Peder benefited immensely from her vibrant and creative spirit. She was an accomplished artist, a thoughtful writer, a gourmet cook and an avid gardener - a true connoisseur of beauty and goodness. Maureen was also deeply concerned with social advocacy. She was a champion of the underprivileged. She committed herself to the relief work of her church - both locally and globally - believing that each person can make a difference in the lives of others. Indeed, this credo echoed throughout all aspects of her life. As part of a family visit to South East Asia in March 2008, Maureen visited a school in rural Cambodia that touched her heart. Koh Kandal School, built by the Lutheran World Federation, provides the only opportunity for primary education to children in this impoverished area. To honour Maureen's life and work, the Vinge family has established the Koh Kandal School Project to expand the opportunities for the young students at this school. For more information or to make a donation in her memory, please visit www.mvinge.com . A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 30 August at Hosanna Lutheran Church, 9009 - 163 Street, Edmonton.

Dear Don and Peder,
What a sad day it was when we at Charlotte Country Day learned of Maureen's death. She was our compassionate leader, and the fruits of her work will go on forever. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,

Since we first met on that great three-week orientation tour of Germany you planned for new DND teachers in the summer of 1969 you brought together a fine staff of teachers here at McKernen where our son Jonathan was able to attend junior high. Glad you moved to Edmonton after all those years with DND. So sorry to hear of Maureen's passing. We extend our warmest sympathies to you and to Peder. Hopefully you will add updates to mvinge.com as to progress at he the school in Cambodia.

Mrs. Vinge was Vice-Principal when I was a student at Strathcona High School. She was always full of encouragement and was someone you could easily count on for advice. She also believed strongly in world travel as a form of learning and encouraged me to travel in high school. My prayers and sympathies to her family at this difficult time.

Maureen was my great Aunt. Though we lived far away and didn't get to see her, Don, and Peder very often, there was always something about Maureen that was so intriguing. I remember a children's story she told at a reunion many years ago...she was so passionate and so involved that the entire room both young and old were completely drawn in. She was a beautiful woman and that passion is something that I think stood out to many. It's that passion that should inspire many. It is something I will always remember her for; Again, my thoughts are with you, Don and Peder.

Maureen carefully tended her gardens and drew beauty from all that she touched: hearts, flowers, canvases, words, homes, schools...she gave so much of herself to each one...nothing stopped her and nothing will, in her ongoing legacy and her new life. Maureen, Don and Peder, together and individually, have blessed us in so many ways. Thank you...with much love and gratitude, Carol

Maureen was my wonderful aunt, and more importantly a true friend.
She loved both Don and Peder so very much, and always spoke to passionately about them. I know she
is at peace now and is enjoying renewed health.
