As Chairman of the then Canterbury Christ Church College, Maurice Atherton appointed me to be its Principal in 1997. He was a fine Chairman and an even finer man. RIP

A very splendid gentleman of the past

As a young National Service subaltern in the East Yorkshire Reg't I returned from Malaya in the Coronation contingent to take part in the Coronation procession to represent the regiment.
Maurice was in charge of the party on the troopship returning and also getting us ready for the procession itself based on our depot in Beverley. When I joined the regiment initially Maurice was the adjutant and a bit intimidating but excellent company for our Coronation duties but on return to Malaya I saw very little of him being on detachment. My fellow subaltern on the Coronation was Michael Gray who later became Lt-General Sir Michael and Colonel Commandant of the Parachute Regiment. I maintained a lifelong friendship with him until his death having introduced him to Juliette on a blind date when he stayed with me after National Service. I have happy memories of association with Maurice who certainly made me welcome to the East Yorkshires and I send condolences on reading of his death.
