Maurice AUBIN Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Mar. 26, 2016.
Maurice Aubin
I am sad to announce the passing of my father, Maurice Aubin in the early hours of March 20, 2016. He joins his mom and dad, and brother John. My dad was born October 10, 1933 in Estevan, Saskatchewan to Bessie and Joseph Aubin. At an early age Maurice went to work, and was employed by SaskPower for 35 years. Dad always loved to talk of the days when he would climb the power poles with no shirt on and then slide down and get slivers in his chest. Maurice was never late for anything and seldom missed a day of work in his 35 years- "missing work was for hypochondriacs", and he certainly had no patience for that. In 1988, he took early retirement and spent his new found freedom working on old cars, travelling, puttering about his shop and painting. Dad also frequented Market Mall with the other SaskPower retirees, drinking coffee and reminiscing about the good old days. My dad was also an avid walker, undoubtedly always wearing cowboy boots! Dad was an artist and loved art. He loved to travel, and having travelled the world, he told the story of rubbing garlic all over his body so he could walk down the back alleys of Paris without interruption. Soup always had to be hot, beer warm and hamburger...sometimes raw. Maurice was a quirky man, to say anything else would be a disservice to his time on earth, and despite having left this world now, we are left with tokens of his presence. Chief among them, the hilarious, and often politically incorrect, anecdotes which he bestowed upon family, friends and frankly anyone else he encountered. So much so, that my friends would call the house for the sole purpose of listening to his hysterical responses for the simplest of questions, and my kids would reread their birthday cards for the sake of a good laugh. To be kept alive in their hearts, he leaves behind his children, Theresa Aubin-Singh (Sanjeev) and Joseph Aubin; his children's mother Verna Jaeb; five grandchildren who he was so very proud of, Dominique (Shawn Rislund), Lauren, Christian and Madeline Singh, and Rebecca Sivertson; siblings, Yvonne Rundle, Miriam Callaway, and Ken Aubin; special niece Jody Gilbertson and husband Cam. I must thank those who showed such kindness to my father over the past couple years: Jackie Stephens (community nurse), you are a gift; Bev Glacken thank you for taking my dad out for cheeseburgers!; the nurses at St. Paul's Hospital 5th Medicine who cared for him last winter, bringing him tomatoes which really brightened his days; the wonderful staff at The Saskatoon Convalescent Home; Jodi and Cam Gilbertson, I am so ever grateful for you everything you have done. I want to acknowledge my daughter Dominique who cared for my dad in his last few days, you are a beautiful nurse, and my husband, Sanjeev who has always shown such kindness and patience. At my father's request, there will be no funeral. We will have a gathering at a later date to toast to this quirky little man who was so full of piss and vinegar! Maurice my brother was the best brother anyone could have. As a youngchild he would take me with him on some of his many adventures. As a Univ student he visited often and each visit consisted of opening my fridge and commenting on the lack of food of his liking. He and I took some trips together over the years and we had to arrive at least an hour before the flight .He was particularly kind and caring especially to our Mo m .You are now with our Dad and Mom and brother John.I will treasure our time together last summer.I will miss you dear brother!!

The Aubin Family

I'll always remember Maurice and my father driving from Allan to Colonsay for what they called Wontons. Maurice would say they have the best Wontons ever I would say you mean Wonton Soup? And my Dad would say Yeah Wontons. I tried a few more times to correct them but with little or no success I had to give in, and it was so. Consequently, we went for Wontons quite often. And you know . . . they were actually right . . . Colonsay had the best Wontons ever. So sorry to hear of Maurice's passing. He will be missed.

Uncle Maurice was a unique character. As I reflect back on Uncle Maurice, the 2 things that stand out most was his cynical sense of humor and his fondness for turkey soup. Our thoughts are with Auntie Verna, Theresa, and family during this time.

My deepest condolences to Morris's family. I worked with Morris for a few years at SPC and never was a dull moment. From drinking pickle juice to him calling it as he saw it! I happened to see him in St Paul's last winter so stopped in to say HI. He was in pretty rough shape. He is at peace now and has left all of us that knew him with memories that we will always have a chuckle at.
