Maurice Rice Obituary
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Maurice M. Rice, 82, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, passed unexpectedly December 8, 2013 after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Esther (nee Kawecki) for 61 years and was preceded in death by his parents, John N. and Hazel; brothers, John, Cardor, Leon Rice; sister, Sandra Brown; and daughter, Kathleen. He was the proud and devoted father of six, Michele Wingard, Daniel (Judy), John (Beth), James (Kristin), and Timothy; he was the grandfather to 14 and he was great-grandfather to seven.
He was a U.S. Naval Reserve and U.S. Army Veteran. He saw combat in the Korean War serving under NATO Command in 1952 and 1953, and was honorably discharged. He spent 15 years at The Central News Company as a delivery driver. He became a firefighter for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1968 until his retirement in 1993. In addition to his raising his family, he was an avid fisherman and golfer. He was active in local democratic politics in the 1960's and 1970's, as well as a frequent contributor to the OpEd section of the Akron Beacon Journal. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish and also was very active in Boys Scouts of America and a very successful CYO coach.
His family would like to thank Dr. Ted Shaub and Dr. Michael Pelini and the staff of Akron City Hospital for their care and compassion.
The family will receive friends and family 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (on the Historic Tallmadge Circle). Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2013 at St. Joseph Church in Cuyahoga Falls. Interment to follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

Dear Jim, Kristin and extended Rice family, I just wanted to say how sorry I was to here about your father and his on going illness and untimely death. My heart goes out to you and to your extended family especially during the holiday season.
Although I never met your father, I can only imagine what kind of man he was based on your dedication as a father to Cameron and Cooper. Based on that he must have been a great dad.
