Mavis Evans

Mavis Kyle was part of a U. of S. Faculty Club cabal that consisted of myself, Kathy Gray, Joan Llewellyn, and Hugh Arscott. For a period of 12 years or so we met and conversed late on Friday afternoons and killed ourselves laughing. Mavis was one of the most powerful and humorous people I have ever met. I still treasure and miss our mutual camaraderie. It was a joy to see her become Mavis Evans as she found happiness with Peter on Vancouver Island. It was typical of Mavis that she sheltered our family for a week in Duncan after the December 2006 storm made us refugees from Hornby Island. My sympathies go to the Evans and Kyle families. She was one of a very special kind, and I am glad that she was part of my life for a while.

I loved knowing Mavis as a colleague at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary when she was the Operating Room Supervisor and I a new Instructor. We shared a passion for good nursing care and a wonderful sense of humor in our personal relationships with each other and a group of friends. She was so happy to have met Peter and to marry and share life with him.....and then again in Saskatoon when we had both become members of Unviersity Faci;toes pf Nursing. We have kept in touch at Christmas and I will miss the wonderful stories and ongoing friendship. My sincere sympathy to the Evans and Kyle family. I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the Evans and Kyle family on the loss of this great lady. I well recall sharing the excitement of my childhood friends, Susan and David when she would visit them - bringing along her REAL NURSES KIT ! Seeing this lovely photo of her reminds me of the enjoyment and pride she emanated in these visits with her cherished niece and nephew- which, at times I was fortunate enough to be privy to -and of her kindliness to me- and those extra band-aids too!

Mavis was such a positive, encouraging person. She inspired others to do their best. It was an honour to have her for a teacher, and then to work with her as a colleague. Her wonderful sense of humour made her the life of any party. I will never forget her pantomime about putting on pantyhose that were too small ! She had a significant influence on both my education and my career. Thank you, Mavis. We will miss you.

Mavis was a wonderful mentor, friend and colleague! She taught us all that a clear vision, hard work and a smile on your face could get you through almost any situation.

I also remember Mavis and her positive outlook on life. I met Mavis at the Maole Bay Yacht club, where we were all members.

Mavis was, indeed, an Exceptional Nurse, Teacher, Faculty Member, Colleague, Mentor, and Nurse Leader who was always so proud of the accomplishements of her Family, Students, and Colleagues. For those who do not know, in the late 1970's Mavis taught the very first Nursing Research class in the College of Nursing; the research class content was a really new concept in Nursing Education.

Mavis was a great friend of mine. We shared lots of laughs and over the years exchanged many "tacky" gifts of plastic flowers and the infamous plastic Easter Chicken. I will miss her dearly as will her family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
