Maxwell Kalman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 28 to Nov. 29, 2009.
OBITUARY MAXWELL MYRON KALMAN 1906 - 2009 Passed away peacefully on November 27, 2009, at the Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, in his 104th year. Distinguished architect, developer, and community volunteer, Max Kalman was born in Montreal, the fourth child of immigrant parents from Romania. He studied architecture at Columbia and McGill Universities, receiving the Anglin Norcross Medal on graduation from McGill in 1931. He was a leader in commercial and residential architecture. He designed Canada's first shopping centre, Norgate at Ville St-Laurent, in 1949; the Norgate housing complex was the first project invested in by CMHC under the National Housing Act. In the 1950s he turned to development. He created the Town of Lorraine, also supported by CMHC, considered a model for its quality of suburban life. He participated in the Canadian efforts in World War II by manufacturing parts for training aircraft and merchant marine submarine-detection for the Department of Munitions and Supply. He was active in community service as a fundraiser and volunteer, particularly for State of Israel Bonds and the United Jewish Appeal. He was awarded the Louis Marshall Gold Medal for service to the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, in 1961. Schools that benefitted from his generous donations of money and time include the School of Architecture at Technion University, the Hebrew University, the Weizmann Institute, and Barilon University, all in Israel; and McGill University in Montreal. Max survived his first wife, Frances, his second wife, Rose, and his son, Lawrence. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Hal and Linda (Vancouver), daughter-in-law Barbara (Rehovot), step-daughter and husband Fran and Tully Yagod (Montreal), step-daughter Elsa Wendman (Aventura), and step-son and wife Michael and Laya Abramowitz (Ottawa). Cherished by his seven grandchildren, Sat-Sung, Hilary, Trudy, Linda, Josh, Daniel, and David; his step-grandchildren Murray, Susan, Jeffrey, Audrey, and Mia; and his 11 great-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Special appreciation to his loving niece, Louisa, and his devoted caregivers, Lori, Belvina, and Marjorie, Winnie, and Carmetta. Funeral service will be held at Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon West, Montreal, on Monday, November 30, at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at the New Jewish Cemetery, Osgoode, Ottawa (Agudath Israel section) at 12:45 p.m. Shiva at Le Waldorf, 7400 Cote St-Luc Road, Apt. 426, Montreal, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to the School of Architecture, McGill University; or to the Weitzmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel.

Dear Fran and Tully, Laya and Michael, Elsa, your families and the Kalman family,

We were sorry to hear of the passing of Max. Please accept our deepest sympathies to you on your loss. We were privileged to know Max in his later years. He was a model for us, a man of great dignity. He lived life fully, enjoyed life fully and contributed in so many ways to the world around him. His memory and his creative legacy are our blessing.

Dear Hal, Linda, Sat-Sung and Hilary
Please accept my sincere and heartfelt sympathy on Max's demise. My connection with him has mostly to do with his determination to rebuild the Summer Pavilion on Parliament Hill, and every time I take the new NCC guides on their training tour around the hill (I've been doing it for 22 years), I make sure that they understand that it was Max's efforts that led to the re-establishment of this important feature. He had a huge influence on the modern landscape, but beyond that, he understood the importance of history and how it must all flow together.

I can't be in Montreal to see you over the next few days, but I am with you in spirit.
