I just found out Dr. Amelon has passed while I was trying to find Mitzi. I am so sorry to hear this. He was my doctor from 1953 until he retired. He was themost caring doctor and family friend. He came to out home if we were unable to go to his office and did so many extra things that most doctors don't normally do. I'll never find another doctor like him. I've often bragged about him to my friends. Mitzi was my doctor after he retired but I lost contact with her. He raised wonderful daughters and was loved by so many people. More doctors should be like Dr. Maynard Amelon.

There is not enough I can say about this man. I was his patient before I was a year old. He put my first stitches in, he made me feel better when I was sick. I had a chance to work for him for a little over a year. In that time I learned so much. He was a fantastic doctor with an amazing memory. I will always feel honored and privileged to have know him. My deepest condolences to the family and friends he left behind. I will miss you forever doc.

When I think of my ol' friend, Maynard, I see the doors fly open in the Clubhouse and him coming
through...whether walking on his own, with a cane, with a walker, or being pushed in a wheel-chair......
A big smile beaming on his face and remarks for anyone within range. We would meet, shake hands, hug and spit out something rude to one another. Following Tai Chi, after everyone had hugged him, pecked his cheek, shook his hand or patted his shoulder.....he would then, join me and the coffee group. We would share the daily news with everyone....and then, he and I would return to our favorite conversations...we would share our childhoods...
laughing and shaking our heads....as we recalled those memories of young boys growing up in the Columbia River bottomland or his beloved Missouri farmland.
Very seldom are we given the opportunity to revisit our own childhood, let alone the opportunity to visit the "childhood of an ol' doctor from Missouri". I will forever be grateful for that experience, as I will forever have the vision of Maynard bursting through the doors ready for Tai Chi and for the day.
You will be missed, my friend.

So sorry to the Amelon Family. I have known Mitzi Amelin, DO, Since I was in medical school at Kirksville in the organization of the student osteopathic medical Association. I then did my internship with her at Garden City Hospital. I also did my medicine residency there while she was in her family practice residency at that institution. Dr. Maynard Amelon is the patriarch of a great osteopathic family tradition which helps to build the great osteopathic family found in southeastern Michigan. He will be greatly missed !

My Dad and Mom introduced me to Doc A around 1956 when I was 6 yrs old. I heard stories of Doc A from my dad all my life...stories of when they were in the Army together in WW II. I was fortunate to meet Doc A and his wonderful wife Jessie again around 2009 when they visited my family and I in Indiana. I am retired and living in Florida now and I have been fortunate to have shared something with Doc A that my Dad gave to me over 66 yrs ago. I am proud to have shared his name...The name of a Great, Great Man.

Dr Amelon was my family doctor when growing up in Redford. He was a great man and I always remember going in to the office and admiring his daughters ice skating pictures hanging in his office.

My thoughts and prayers are with you,Jessie and your daughters at this very difficult time. I always enjoyed the visits you made to the Cartwright area (when I was young and still at home) where you would visit my Mom, Hazel Wall. She always looked forward to seeing you drive up in front of her house. You definitely put a smile on Mom's face.

Dr. Amelon was an inspiration to me as a fellow physician as well as a great father and community leader. His tireless efforts to improve Redford Township and all of his patients as well as the local schools leads us to wonder if we could ever even meet his devotion. God Bless Maynard and his family. May his soul rest in peace and inspire generations to come.

On behalf of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM), I had the good fortune to visit with Dr. Amelon and Mrs. Jessie Amelon earlier this year at their Palm Springs home. I have never seen such a kind and compassionate physician, a man of wisdom and thoughtfulness. He invited me home like a family member and talked at length about his humble beginnings and his philosophy of serving others. On leaving, he gave me a copy of his simple but very powerful book "Thoughts of a doctor" that chronicled among other things his experiences as a military policeman in some parts of India and Pakistan. I sincerely wish the world had many physicians like him. My condolences go to Jessie and the entire family. KCOM will miss Dr. Amelon and his contributions to osteopathic medicine. We will always remember his generosity and his service to KCOM and A.T. Still University. Thank you, Dr. Amelon.

Sincerely,
