Maynard Weimer, dies at 84

Maynard John Weimer, 84, of Valparaiso (Liberty Township), Indiana, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 8, 2024.

Maynard was born January 27, 1940, to John and Helen (Dillingham) Weimer at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso, Indiana. His grandparents were Warren and Ferne Proseus Dillingham and John and Cora Hineline Weimer. He and his wife Anita (nee Gurley) were married for 31 years.

Maynard was raised in Liberty Township. His family roots ran deep within Liberty Township, and he was the fifth generation of the Hineline and Dillingham families. The Dillingham Family owned a large swath of land in Liberty Township, including Sunset Hill Farm County Park, and they later sold a small portion of this land to the Hineline family.

Maynard grew up adjacent to Mink Lake Golf Course and became an avid golfer. He began playing the course at age eight and continued playing throughout his life. His passion for golf included watching it and attending professional golf events like the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the Western Open. Maynard also had a crowning achievement in golf, getting a hole-in-one.

Maynard was an early achiever, and as a youth, he worked as a paperboy for the Vidette-Messenger and sold greeting cards, earning enough money to purchase a three-speed bicycle. At Cedar Lake Boys' Camp, he was awarded the Junior Camper of the Year Award and the Senior Camper of the Year Award for Bible verse memorization. He was also a camp counselor at Cedar Lake Boys' Camp. When he was 14, he received a certificate of completion for the Teacher Training Course from the Evangelical Teacher Training Association of Chicago.

Maynard graduated from Liberty Township High School in 1958. He participated in various extracurricular activities, including varsity basketball, baseball, track, band, chorus, and the Latin Club. He also participated in school productions, including the Christmas Vespers and playing the lead in Mikado.

Following high school, he attended Manchester College and the University of New Mexico. Then, in 1963, he began his 37-year career at National Steel, Midwest Division in Portage, where he became the supervisor of the chem lab on the Tin Line. He often traveled to customer locations to inspect or address product issues.

Maynard also served in the community. He and other 1958 Liberty High School graduates created a scholarship fund honoring former Principal Harlan A. Siegesmund. The scholarship was annually awarded to a deserving Liberty Township resident who graduated from Chesterton High School. He also faithfully served on the board of directors for Midwest Steel Family Federal Credit Union.

In his 60s, Maynard renewed his commitment to Christ and was baptized at Liberty Bible Church in 2014. He also became an avid student of the Bible while attending Bible Study Fellowship meetings in Arizona and Illinois.

Maynard was known for his kindness to his mother as he remembered birthdays and such and for the twinkle in his eye when he shared something funny or edgy. When speaking before a group, he could be insightful and eloquent. He was faithful to the end while caring for his dad and mom in their final days, making sure they received excellent care.

Maynard is survived by his wife, Anita; his daughter Lorelei Weimer of Chesterton; his stepdaughter, Jami Mathews of Naples, Italy; his stepson Bret Lawrence of Valparaiso; his granddaughters Ariel (Simon Petris) Tribole of Oregon, WI, and Alora Tribole of Chesterton; his step-grandchildren Sydney (Ishmael) Larkins of Saint Robert, MO; Blake Mathews (Olivia) of Goldston, NC; and Dane Mathews of North Carolina; and step-great-grandchildren Elias and Zoey Larkins, of Saint Robert, MO. And we can't leave out his furry friend Chewy.

Maynard also leaves behind his brothers Curtis (Mary) Weimer of Valparaiso and Jack (Kathie) Weimer of Gurnee, IL, and his sister Ferne Weimer of Duncanville, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Michele Weimer Tribole.

A funeral service honoring Maynard's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on June 30, 2024, at Liberty Bible Church-Valparaiso Campus, 1155 South Sturdy Road, Valparaiso, Indiana. Pastor Brad Haitsma will officiate. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery at a later date.

My condolences to Anita and her family. I worked with Maynard for 18 years until he retired. He was great to work with. We golfed many times together in the Midwest golf league and golf outings. Those were great times. He will be missed.

Maynard and I worked together frequently at Midwest Steel. Before we went into management, we used to play cards while the unit was running. Good guy to work with and he was but 11 days older than me. I'm sorry for his passing and many people will miss him. I think his daughter went to school with my oldest son.
