Yesterday

Grandmommy's hands... as soft as the petals of which she cared for and loved so much. Those are the hands I long to hold again someday. Grandmommy, your love and devotion to family and friends knew no bounds. Your food warmed our stomachs, your stories captivated our minds, and your smile illuminated every room which had the honor of your presence. Though each holiday will hold an empty chair, each bite of paella will lack the key ingredient, and every milhojas attempted will be no match for yours, we accept this- as you are back in your rightful and beloved seat with Granddaddy. Te amo mas alla de la luna y las estrellas.

Sending deepest sympathy and condolences to all the Coghlan family and all who knew and loved Mayté.

Through good fortune, I was lucky enough to meet you via the joining of our families by marriage.

Your presence was the heart and anchor of a far-reaching family, many of whom I´ve never even met in person, but still seem to know lots about. Held together by a bond of love that crossed borders, generations and households in multiple countries including, I´m privileged and lucky to be able to say, my own.

A devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and cherished relative to so many, Mayté created lives where laughter, stories, traditions and culture were shared no matter the distance.

Whether hosting festive gatherings or making a meal into a celebration, Mayté made everyone feel welcome.

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we give thanks for a life that blessed so many.

Nick Purcell.

I met Cecil and Mayte Coghlan when I was a medical student in Santiago de Chile in the late 1960s. Dr. Coghlan was a brilliant, charismatic cardiologist, with great humanity and passion for clinical research and patient care. I worked with Dr. Coghlan as a medical student in Chile, and again when I joined the Division of Cardiology at UAB as a training fellow. Dr. Coghlan was instrumental in helping me obtain a training position at UAB in 1976. The Coghlans became our family in Birmingham. When our second child was born in 1977, our 3-year-old daughter stayed at the Coghlan home until my wife Patricia and the newborn came home days later.

Dr. Coghlan was a very unique physician. He would literally spend hours evaluating with each patient in the hospital or outpatient clinic. When I see some of Dr. Coghlan's former patients, I warn them that I am no match for Dr. Coghlan. They always smile in agreement...

Cecil and Mayte would frequently open their home and kitchen (and hearts!) for out of town and international patients. Mayte was known for her frequent trips to the Birmingham airport to pick up out of town patients and bring them to their home.

Cecil and Mayte were a truly special couple. Incredibly generous and caring. We loved them and will miss them.

Our loss is heavens gain. I can only imagine how happy Cecil must be having Mayte with him again.

Dear Leslie, Harold, Michael, Anthony and all of Maytés family of whom she was incredibly proud, we send you all our Deepest Sympathy and love on the loss of dearest Mayté.

She was a truly amazing lady in every way. If ever there was a natural 'people person' it was Mayté. We were all so fortunate to have had her in our lives. When we first met, we just 'clicked' and felt as if we had known her for years. We are sure there are many people she met who felt the same.

Mayté just had that lovely way about her.

Thank you Mayté, may you rest in peace reunited with your darling Cecil.

All our love Maggie, Patrick and Tom Purcell. Wales, U.K.

With great pain and sorrow, we, the Family Foradori Montero, as far as we are, here from Chile, feel so sorry, and we've sent to you all, the Family Coghlan Montero, our sincere heartfelt condolences. Aunt Mayte was so important for all of us, along with uncle Cecil. They both formed an extraordinary and full of love family home, and grew up four sons filled with love and pride, each one a remarkable human being in his own way, thanks to Mayte's enormous grace and that great love they shared, as evident as it is now eternal. May our good Lord God keep her, along with Cecil, in his heavenly destiny.
