Mel Gittleman Obituary

Published by Star Tribune from Mar. 5 to Mar. 6, 2013.
Gittleman, Mel Born July 10, 1929, Mel Gittleman died on March 3rd at age 83 after a long, hard-fought battle with Parkinson's disease. Survived by devoted family, wife, Chelle of 55 years; sons, Andy, Mark (Deb Oberman); daughter, Marci (Randy Blumenstein); seven adoring grandchildren, Tess and Mack Gittleman, Mara, Joshua and Sophie Blumenstein, and Sam and Isaac Gittleman. He loved, and was proud of his wife, children, and grandchildren. Melvin Gittleman was widely recognized as one of the visionary leaders in condominium development and management in the Twin Cities. During the 1970s and 80s, he built both luxury apartment communities and condominium developments that exemplified his vision for community living. His total commitment to quality, sophistication and hands on management was unwavering. Mel developed some of the first high rise residential buildings in downtown Minneapolis that include Loring Green East, Loring Green West and Marquette Place. In addition, Mel also built many other projects in suburban areas throughout the Twin Cities. All of the developments that he created are considered to be long term successful projects in the marketplace and are commonly referred to as "Gittleman" built buildings. As CEO of Gittleman Management, Mel routinely shared with everyone his compelling vision for community living. Through the years, he enjoyed and maintained many wonderful long term relationships that he deeply valued. In 2012, Mel was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Community Association Institute of MN for his many contributions to the association management industry and profession. He spent his life doing what he loved, developing projects and managing associations. Special thanks to caregivers Wendy and Lucretia for their devotion and loving care. Funeral services for Mel Gittleman will be held at the Adath Jeshurun Congregation located at 10500 Hillside Lane West in Minnetonka on Wednesday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Mel's honor be made to the National Parkinson Foundation of MN, 5905 Golden Valley Road, Suite 201, Golden Valley, MN 55422, or the Jewish Family and Children's Services located at 13100 Wayzata Bld., Suite 400, Minnetonka, MN 55305. SHIVA: Wed. 7PM, at the family home. Hodroff-Epstein 612-871-1234 www.hodroffepstein.com

I moved into Bush Terrace Apartments in my late 20's, it was the early 70's. Bush Terrace was built, owned and managed by Mel Gittleman. He was a brilliant business man. His rental rates were very reasonable, as were the subsequent rent increases, so you were comfortable signing and renewing three year leases, which is unheard of, the industry standard is one year. It meant that there was very, very little turn-over, which is very costly and hard on the property and long-term tenants tend to treat the property more like their own.

I never met Mel, but Chelle would often bring “little” Andy and Mark to swim at the Bush pool. For a short time, after my retirement, I worked part time for Gittleman in the office at Grant Park, where I met the “adult” Mark Gittleman and we had a chance to reminisce about the Bush Terrace days.

In 2010, more than 30 years after leaving Bush, I decided to downsize from my townhouse and bought a condo at Edina West, one of Mel's early condo complexes. This past fall the Edina West Association hired the Gittleman Company to manage our property. So we've come full circle and I couldn't be happier. Mel Gittleman was held in high regard by everyone who has ever lived at a Gittleman property or worked for the company!

At the time, when you rented from him, you signed a three year lease, which is unheard of – but it meant that there was very, very little turn-over, which is very costly and hard on the property. I was very concerned how much the rent would go up at the end of a three year lease – again, very wisely, he raised it only $10/month so I signed up for another three years.

After six years at Bush I went on to live in and own two townhouses. In 2010 I decided to downsize and bought a condo at Edina West, one of Mel's early condo complexes. This past fall the Edina West Association hired Gittleman to manage our property. So we've both come full circle and I couldn't be happier. Back in the early 1970s I worked for Mel as he started his vision of building quality living by his first project called Edina West Condominiums. He instilled in me values that I have carried with me my entire life,if your going to build something, build it to last.Although I never told him, I thought of Mel as my second Dad. Chelle,Andy,Mark,Marci-I send you my deepest sympathy,I know how you feel because I feel it too. Leland Bentley

I was so saddened to learn of Mel's death this morning. I am so sorry for your loss. I am glad that he is able to join my father, Jim Reding, in heaven, so they can hold their important meetings again. My father respected Mel and will enjoy visiting with him again. They can share stories and laugh together. Please know my thoughts are with you as I know how hard it is to lose a father and grandfather. We will all miss him! He was a wonderful man.
