Melba Trussell Stokes

Melba Trussell Stokes passed peacefully Thursday, October 10, 2013 at her home at Montclair Parc Assisted Living . Melba was born May 28, 1919, in Arcadia, Louisiana to Abe Trussell and Sallie Courtney Green.

Preceeding her in death were her husband O.E. Stokes, daughter Nancy Stokes Lemaire, daughter-in-law Mary Lou Stokes, brothers George Reuben Trussell, John CumbeeTrussell, Abe Weyland Trussell and Doyle Ragan Trussell and her cherished sisters-in-law with whom she enjoyed many wonderful trips and games of Rook.

She is survived by her sons Kerry E. Stokes, Ron E. Stokes and wife Ann, and Greg E. Stokes and wife Sandy. She leaves eight grandchildren; Sally Sanford, Sheron Zellman, Chris Stokes, Sarah Stokes Cressy, Jill Stokes Savoie, Philip Kersh, Michael Kersh, and Sarah Harris, and five great grandchildren. She was lovingly called Grandmommy, and her many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly called her Aunt Bill.

Melba was a long time and dedicated member of Highland Baptist Church and later the First Baptist Church Sarah Naomi Class.

Melba's family was at the center of her life, and she cherished her relationships with each member. She was the last of our Trussell family elders and they have left a long and lasting legacy.

A special Thanks to Doris and Ethel and all of the staff at Montclair Parc for their caring and comfort, and to special friends Martha Johnson and Nelda Thurmond.

A family service will be held at Montclair Parc Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.

I was saddened to hear of Melba's death. She was one of mother's best friends, and we lived across the street from the Stokes family. My condolences to Kerry, Ron, and Greg.
