Oh my ... that's about all that has gone through my head for the past number of hours since I found out. I just received a newsletter from Columbia that has the news in it.
I was Melissa's roommate at CBC her second year. I last saw her over the Halloween weekend in Calgary in about 1999 but then lost touch. She was exactly as you say in the obituary. The quote from her ... I can hear her saying it.
Words aren't enough to express my condolences. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

I was a friend of Melissa's from Columbia Bible College and was anticipating seeing her again at our 10 year reunion this summer. I just found out that she passed away through one of our classmates. She was loved dearly at CBC. I will share this sad news with our classmates and the staff at CBC. On behalf the staff and faculty at CBC and her fellow alumni, our thoughts and prayers are with you. I worked with Melissa several years ago at Mini-University. Although I only worked with her for a short time, I knew I had met someone special and I feel blessed that I got the chance to know her. I will always remember Melissa as having a wonderful spirit and a smile that you couldn't forget.
With deepest sympathy,

Our family was very sad to hear of Miss Loewen's passing. All three of our children were lucky enough to have had Miss Loewen touch their lives. She was a wonderful person who did not only give them the experience of music, but also taught them to be responsible & to believe in themselves.
Our thoughts & prayers are with all your family, at this difficult time.

I worked with Melissa at McKenzie Lake School the year she graduated University. She taught Music to our Kindergarten classes. She was such a kind, compassionate teacher and she made a big difference to our school. I remember how often she spoke of her family and how much she loved her parents and brother. My heart goes out to you, and I send my deepest condolences. She was a very special person and I cherish the memories I shared with her.

Our deepest sympathies to you, Harold, Lori and Steven and all who love Melissa. I had the honor of being one of Melissa's pastors at Foothills Mennonite Church during her teen years. As my wife, Brenda, and I worked with the youth of the church we were privileged to have Melissa as a vibrant part of our youth group. As a candle illuminates a room, Melissa brought light to the many activities in which she was involved. It was incredible to witness God working through Melissa at such a young age. Her life exemplified the "fruits of the spirit" and she was a tremendous example of God's love and care to those around her. Her excitement and enthusiasm couldn't help but bring a smile to your face. At this time I look to Psalm 121 and read: "I lift my eyes to the hills from where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of the heavens and the earth." Melissa, Good bye for now!

Our family is saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Ms. Loewen. She was both of our daughters' music teacher at Langdon School and will be deeply missed. She was truly excited to see the students excel in whatever they were working on. We were always so amazed at how she remembered everyone's name...she taught so many. We will remember her as well.

We first met Melissa as a young girl in our neighbourhood. As she grew, we came to appreciate the fine qualities that we all knew and loved about her as an adult. Then, the day came when Melissa was old enough to baby-sit our two young daughters. Amanda and Chelsea couldn’t wait until Mom and Dad went out on a date and Melissa would come to baby-sit. We could always guarantee that there would be plenty of fun and laughter when Melissa was around. Melissa became an excellent role-model for our girls. Her love of music was apparent at a young age. Looking back, it is not a surprise that Melissa would combine her love of children and her love of music to become a music teacher.
Melissa was a woman of great faith and integrity. Even as a young girl, she was conscientious and hard-working. She lived up to her own high standards and inspired all who knew her with her sense of fun and innovation. God lent her to us for 29 years and the world is a better place for it. Those who had the privilege of knowing Melissa are blessed for the influence she has had on our lives and will continue to have in our hearts. Rest well, sweet soul,
Love always,
The Gerlitz family

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Melissa. I had the pleasure of attending the Indus and Langdon schools for 3 years. During that time my oldest son Brandon Haggstrom (about to enter grade 10)was a student of Melissa's. I will remember her kindness, patience and incredible understanding with this young man who thought it impossible that he could be either an artist nor a musician. He challenged the very audacity of someone who would promote any positive to playing music. He is now a fine member of his school band, and has taught himself to play guitar and keyboards. It wasn't apparent for a while but her class is where it started. I wish I had taken the time before to let Melissa know that she did make a difference. We are now several hundred kilometers away but heard the news and felt the pain. Be assured your daughter, sister, and friend has left a mark that reaches far and wide. She will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We were so saddened to hear of Ms. Loewen's sudden passing. Ali had been telling me all about how she had been teaching her grade 2 class about the "Land of Staff" - Ali was interested in music and was finding it easy to understand due to Ms. Loewen's creative ways to inspire her students. We are so thankful Ali had the opportunity to know Ms. Loewen, and we hope it helps to know how she touched so many lives.

Our family offers our most profound sympathies to your family. Mason remembers Ms. Loewen giving students a standing ovation and enjoying his attempts on the recorder. She always enjoyed it when her students tried their best. Then she praised them for their efforts. She will be missed.

My wife Amy and 2 daughters have known Melissa and her family most of our lives. Melissa has always been the product of two of the most loving, nuturing parents on this planet whose beliefs have always been centered in Christ. My daughters have been honored to have Melissa as a baby sitter, piano instructor, and most of all a true friend and example of what is good in life. We will miss her smile and everything about her. The comfort we have is that she has passed from the loving hands of the Lowen's to the loving hands of Christ.
We will miss her dearly Melissa..

I had the privilege of working with Melissa for many years at Indus and Langdon Schools. Melissa was always passionate about her work and shared her passion for the arts with hundreds of students. I am so sad Melissa is gone, it seems like only yesterday we were wandering around the Farmer's Market. My heart goes out to her family, friends and students. You are so missed.

I had the honour of meeting Melissa at University and later sharing a home with her for a couple of years.
I will always remember Melissa as a passionate, caring, fun, encouraging, loving and faithful woman of God.
Melissa was so supportive, so kind. I will fondly remember our many walks, bowls of popcorn, evening talks and other times together.
I will remember her amazing friendship with her parents, how much she adored her brother, sister-in-law and new niece, and how dear she held all of her friends, nature, music, travel, literature and faith.
With love and gratefulness for our friendship.
