Melva Burke Obituary
Services were Dec. 23 at Hintz-Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein. Burial is in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.
Melva was born Oct. 12, 1916, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Melvin and Catherine "Allie" (Almira) Bing. She graduated from Oelwein High School in 1933. She was a librarian at Oelwein Library for 50 years. She married Howard E. Burke on Feb. 21, 1947, in Oelwein. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Rebekahs.
A memorial fund has been established.
Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne (Thomas) Thurman, of Marion, Iowa, and Barbara (Gary) Brandt, of Bettendorf; five grandchildren, Anne (Eric) Tate, of Marion, Sally Thurman, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sandy (Brandon) Hamous, of Lessville, La., Joel Brandt, of Terre Haute, Ind., and Scott Brandt, of Bettendorf.
She was preceded in death by her husband on July 7, 1985; a brother, Lewis "Dorr" Bing; sister, Helen Smith; and her parents.
