Melvin Walter Mel Cyra

CYRA - Melvin Walter Mel Cyra passed away on December 8, 2009 at Kelowna General Hospital surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette, his children, Annelle and Derek (Paula), and his grandchildren, Cassidy, Marley, and Jayce. Other family members include brother, Lavern Cyra (Annette), sister, Evelyn Pollock, and sister-in-law, Lori Cyra. Mel was predeceased by his father, August Cyra, mother, Rachel Cyra, sister, Irene Lock, and brother, Art Cyra. Mel was born in Peace River, Alberta on November 28, 1939. He moved to Boundary Bay in his younger years and graduated from Delta Secondary where he met Jeanette. He started his first career in the grocery business working at the Ladner Shop Easy and carried-on to become the store Manager of EconoMart until 1970. Mel began volunteering as a firefighter in Delta in 1963, and eventually joined the Delta Fire Department in 1970. He loved his second career and cherished the camaraderie of his coworkers; eventually he retired as Assistant Chief in 1997. His devotion to the Fire Department was only exceeded by his love for his family. Mel's family wishes to thank Dr. Solano, Dr. Foster and the compassionate ICU staff at KGH.
