In memory of
Jim Schweiter
October 26, 2018
I met Col. Garten with my father, Maj. Gen. Hank Schweiter, when the former was at Walter Reed recovering from his wounds in Viet Nam. Although my exposure to him was brief, I remember that he was more interested in my dad and me than himself. My father held him in the highest regard, and Col. Garten was a true hero. My belated sympathies to his family

Thank you for your service, sir, and in particular, for participating in the liberation of my family at Los Banos, who were interned there until 1945. May you rest in peace. We are forever indebted to you and your comrades.
Gratefully yours,

I wish to thank you for saving my life, and the life of my family. I was one of the babies at Los Banos, in the Philippines. I wish I could have thanked you personally, but this will have to do. If there is a heaven, then you are probably being shown around by my parents, grandparents and the rest of the Casanave clan up there. You rescued a lot of us. PS, my wife, Naomi, is currently working for your alma mater, City College.
