Melvin Edward Easton, age 79, peacefully departed this life on November 10, 2023, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on June 20, 1944, in South Bend, Indiana to the late Booker T. and Mahalia Johnson-Easton. Melvin lived a life of gratitude and humility with a deep respect for all Godly creations. His presence will be profoundly missed by many, as he was a shining example of faith, compassion and understanding.

Melvin leaves behind a loving family that includes his cherished sisters, Fae Nailon and Fern Taylor, and his esteemed brothers, Charlie N. Easton, Professor Earnest Easton, and Billy Gene Easton, Sr. Additionally, he is survived by his beloved children, Kahlil (Amanda) Easton of Raleigh, North Carolina, Carl (Qiana) Levy Jr. of Lewisville, Texas, Melissa (Edgar) Levy of South Bend, Indiana, and Mamie Levy of Jamaica Queens, NY.

Melvin's great legacy extends to his grandchildren: Amber Easton, Alicia Easton, Emanuel Edward "Lil Kahlil" Easton, Shaleah Easton, and Brandon Burton of South Bend, Indiana; Kortez Easton, Darian Parrish, Makayla Parrish of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Carl Levy III, Chloe Levy, Colette Levy of Lewisville, Texas. Autumn Levy Gardner of Jamaica Queens, NY. He was also a cherished great-grandfather, bestowing his love upon the youngest members of his family.

In his journey, Melvin was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 27 years, Barbara Easton, as well as his father Booker T. Easton, mother Mahalia Johnson Easton, his siblings Johnny Easton, Herschel Easton, Odie Easton, James Henry Easton, Willie Wilson, Ruby Sims, Shirley Easton, Vivian Scott, and Terry Easton.

Melvin's path to wisdom began within the South Bend Community School Corporation. Following his academic pursuits, he started his career at Miles Laboratories for many years before dedicating his life to troubled youth retiring from being a Corrections Officer at the Juvenile Corrections Center and Ducomb Work Release of South Bend, IN, exemplifying his unwavering commitment and dedication to the betterment of the youth of his community.

Throughout his earthly journey, Melvin found solace and spiritual nourishment within Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. This sanctuary provided him with guidance, strength, and unwavering faith.

Melvin delighted in the simple pleasures bestowed upon him. He found tranquility in the embrace of nature like keeping a meticulous lawn and engaging in walks with his beloved pets. Additionally, he cherished the companionship of his dear friends Paul Gohlar, Roosevelt Topps (father in-law) and Edgar Ashford engaging in heartfelt conversations that enriched his soul.

In accordance with Melvin's humble wishes, no formal service will be held to commemorate his life. Instead, his earthly vessel shall find its resting place beside his beloved wife, Barbara, in the sacred grounds of Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Indiana. May their spirits reunite, eternally bound in love and harmony.

In honor of Melvin's memory, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend, IN 46628.

During this time of remembrance, the staff at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Indiana, will provide support to the family, ensuring that the final arrangements are carried out with utmost honor, care and respect.

I Think about the times that we spent in brotherhood and the wisdom we shared with each other I thank the Lord for the opportunity to serve with Melvin in our youth ministry at the correctional facility that he spearheaded.
