Melvin John Sr.
Melvin "Mel" John Stachura Sr., 87, of Toledo, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at West Park Place, where he had been a resident since 2008. Mel was born in Toledo in April of 1926, to Bertha and John Stachura.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Lee Stachura; his parents, Bertha and John; sisters, Helen Stallbaum and Emily Kalinowski; brother, Leonard Stachura, and daughter, Sharon (Stachura) Monday. Mel leaves behind his four remaining children, Ken Stachura, Mel (Dana) Stachura Jr., Beverly (Ed) Matthews and Mary Beth Stachura; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family and friends.
Mel graduated from the former Libbey High School in 1944 and served in the United States Navy during WWII. He joined the Toledo Fire Department in 1955 and retired as a District Fire Chief in 1981. Mel always had a smile on his face, a ready joke on his tongue and loved to compliment the ladies. He will be sorely missed by everyone who came into contact with him.
In honoring Mel's wishes, his body has been donated to Medical College of Ohio and there will be no viewing. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in his honor at St. Catherine of Siena Church on Thursday, September 5th at 10 a.m. with a small luncheon directly following. Those wishing to make a donation are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio at 800 South Detroit, Toledo, Ohio, 43609, St. Catherine of Siena Church at 4555 North Haven, Toledo, Ohio 43612 , or Senior Care, 3501 Executive Parkway, Toledo, Ohio 43606, in his memory. The family would like to give a special thanks to everyone at West Park Place, Senior Care, and Toledo Hospice for all of their generous acts of kindness to Mel and his family throughout his entire time with them.

So very sorry to hear about the sudden passing of your Dad. I have very fond memories of Mel and Mary growing up on Asbury with you all. He was always very kind to all the kids in the neighborhood. May God bless during this time....you are in my prayers.

Lisa and I have fond memories of Mel. He was a terrific neighbor. He was playing basketball in our backyard when Lisa was born and summoned EMS, He removed her leg from the spokes of her bike and rescued us from the invading squirrel, who was eating a banana on our kitchen table. Rest in peace Mel.
