Mel was one of the gentlest warriors I’ve ever known. He was a dear colleague and advisor. His passion for peace and justice lifted my spirits and raised the bar for effective progressive advocacy.

I will miss my beloved friend and "surrogate" father very much. I knew him all my life, as he and my father, Emmet R. Blake, both worked at the Field Museum. Mel gave a beautiful eulogy at my father's memorial service. Farewell, my beloved friend.

Mel was a most special and gentle man. He was compassionate, fair minded and gracious, and will be truly missed. The only people who didn't love Mel were those who never knew him. My condolences.
