MERLE PERKINS Obituary

Published by San Diego Union-Tribune on Aug. 5, 2012.
PERKINS, MERLE R. July 28, 1921 to July 26, 2012 Merle Perkins, also known as "Perk" or "Perkins" by his friends, departed from his earthly life at home two days before his 91st birthday. He was born in Maine, where he worked to help support his family on the family farm from the age of 11. He served proudly in the Army during World War II fighting at the Battle of the Bulge and at Normandy, where he lost most of his hearing. He married Eva Gagne in 1941. They had three children. Merle moved the family to San Diego, CA. to find work in 1952. He worked for Convair and then went on to own his own businesses that included a card room, a cafe and a flower shop. After his retirement he went to "work" almost daily, playing cards at Sycuan Casino until the week he died. He was an honest, hard-working Christian man with strict moral values, a good sense of humor and a kind heart. He doted on his wife of 64 years as they enjoyed square-dancing, driving a motor home around the United States and taking cruises. He suffered the loss of Eva in 2006, and his eldest son, Noland, in 2009. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Roy, his son, Richard Perkins, his sister, Martha Symonds, his daughter-in-law, Arleen Perkins, six grandchildren, 22 great-grand-children and three great-great-grandchildren as well as many nephews and nieces. A graveside service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery on Wednesday, August 8th, at 11 a.m. The family wishes to thank Pastor Aaron and the members of First Lutheran Church for the love they showed to Merle. Also, the family would like to thank the employees and players at Sycuan Casino for making Merle's last years not only enjoyable but fun! Special thanks go to Jan, Marsha and Susan.
