Savannah- Merritt Woodhull Dixon, III, who turned eighty years old on March 27th, died peacefully at home on Thursday, April 8, 2010. He was born and raised in Savannah and was the only son of Merritt and Betty Dixon. He attended schools in Savannah and later graduated from the Hill School in Pottstown, PA and continued his education at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Merritt served his country during the Korean Conflict as a member of the 117th Air National Guard. He was president of Dixon, Sheehan, Titus Insurance Company and was also an entrepreneur and developer involving motels, subdivisions, and the Hyatt Regency Hotel. He was instrumental in many improvements, including the tower and docks at the Savannah Yacht Club. He was a devoted outdoorsman, with a passion for his citrus groves, the eagles at Modena, boats, and everything pertaining to the coastal waterway and his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet; children and grandchildren, Sandy, and Kim, and children, Leary and Quint; Lysa, and children, Mikey, Drew and Happy; Jim and Mo, and children, Ashton, Noah and J.B.; sisters, Jeanne Papy and Betty Gilbert; sister-in-law, Peggy Johnson and her husband David, their families and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Sunday evening, April 11, 2010 at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. Remembrances may be made to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1008 East Henry St., Savannah, GA 31404.
