To the Strum Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Merritt's passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Merritt during his trip to Cape Breton N.S. years ago. Although I don't remember much, I do remember how deep a connection both Merritt and Pat had with our family. We were always so pleased to receive phone calls and letters. My condolences to the entire family. Merritt was a great man and will be greatly missed.

I remember Merritt (and children) from the Anglican church in Bruce Mines many years ago. I know that my Dad thought a great deal of Merritt and my condolences go out to his family.

Dear Family of Merritt Strum; This message from Roy Hare ,Sarnia Ontario. and Wilma Hardick. We are so very sorry to hear of your loss. Roy and I were pleased to be able to spend some time with Mr Stum in Thessalon Hospital, before we came home to Sarnia.in the fall ,before he went to the Soo. I was facinated to listen to Roy and Merritt talk for an hour or more about their time in the service, some of the activities and fun that he and Lloyd Hare had. Also many tales as they were all growing up,the names of dozens of people they both knew. It was a beautiful moment in time..May you find peace, at this troubled time ,knowing of the many friends he had ,that cared so much. Sincerely,Wilma and Roy.

We were saddened to read about Merritt’s passing. We had the honor of meeting Merritt and Pat during a hospital stay. Merritt shared some interesting stories about his Lighthouse experiences as the Keeper. Merritt was such an interesting person and the stories that he shared were told with such zealous and dedication. During the short time when I met Merritt it was easy to see how much he loved his lovely wife Pat and his family. It was an honour to have met Merritt, a proud Veteran and a true Gentleman. My wife and I send our most sincere condolences to Pat and the Strum Family.
Sincerely, Bill and Randi Moss

To Pat and all of the Strum family I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Merritt. It is like losing a family member. He and my Dad, Ivan Notter, were lifelong friends and I think that is special when my Dad was Merritts teacher in Bruce Mines. They had a very special bond, and growing up we all thought of Merritt as a very special person. I bet my Dad was one of the first people to greet him: with my Mother:) He is going to be missed by so many people and this country has lost a very special person.

When you read about the Palm Leaf, the military uses words like "metorious service" and "gallantry", that is how Merritt served his country, his community and his family. I am honoured and privileged to be able to say that I knew him. The community lost a great historian and respected human being. My thoughts go out the family. Sincerely, Steven Beilhartz

I will remember him with fondest memories - he was often in the municipal office to make copies and discuss the possibility of starting a rumour if things in town seemed to quiet.....he always had a smile and many witty comments - thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
