Merritt Welch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2025.
Merritt Earl Welch, 92, passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2025, in Corinth, Maine. Born on April 26, 1933, in Wilton, Maine to Isaac M. (3rd) and B. Evelyn Lucas Welch, Merritt lived a long and full life marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family and the outdoors.

A 1952 graduate of Wilton Academy, Merritt went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. Stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, as a medic, he also found time to pursue his passion for sports by playing football for the NACOM Knights.

Merritt embarked on a career that reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to public service. He served for 13 years with the Maine State Police before transitioning into the transportation industry. Starting at St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. as a supervisor on the loading dock and working his way up to terminal manager in Bangor, Maine. In his later years he spent time with Pottles Transportation. Throughout his 42 years in the trucking industry he was well respected by his colleagues and peers alike.

Merritt had an appreciation for nature and adventure. He enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling, cherishing the many wonderful memories made with family and friends at his camp on Moosehead Lake. Merritt enjoyed traveling. He embraced every opportunity to explore new places and create lasting memories. He always had a "mah-velous" time at any Casino. He was an avid sports fan and loved following his children's, grandchildren's, and great grandchildren's sporting events.

Above all else, Merritt was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ramona Tomah Welch. Children: Dorothy E.W. (Steven) Fogg, Mark E. (Sandra)Welch , Kathy A. Welch, Karen M. Welch (Tony), and Kelley A.W. Skolfield. Grandchildren: Joshua (Amy) Fogg, Cory Fogg, Bryon Fogg, Jacob (Amanda) Welch, Jill Welch, Kristie Welch (Daniel Meservey), Zachary (Miranda) Welch, Benjamin Skolfield, and Bre Skolfield. Great-grandchildren: Kadence and Ainsleigh Fogg, Leo and Nash Fogg, Colleen, Vincent, and Dominik Welch, Amy, Allyann, and Eli Meservey, Merritt D. Welch, and Maija Skolfield.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter Caytie Lyn Welch.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date to honor Merritt's life.
