Merwyn Powell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 5, 2025.
Merwyn Claire Powell passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of April 18, 2025, at the age of 86. He was a beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and cherished member of the community.

Merwyn is survived by his devoted wife, Roberta Powell, and their three children: Susan Powell, Frank Powell, and Loana O'Connor. He is also survived by his brother, Danny Powell; nieces, Tamera Martin and Kimberly Lunday; and his treasured grandchildren: Victor Petersen, Gwendolen O'Connor, and Benjamin Powell.

Originally from Lebanon, Oregon, Merwyn grew up with his parents, Claire and Laura Powell, and his younger brother, Danny. He attended Oregon State University and later completed his MBA at UC Berkeley. Merwyn worked for 35 years as a Senior Manager, Financial Integration & Interfaces Comptroller's Department at Chevron, where his dedication and brilliance left a lasting impact. He and Roberta lived in Orinda for 29 years before retiring in Clayton, California.

Merwyn was passionate about family, teaching, spiritual learning, and supporting local theatre and dance. He was an assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America and served faithfully for many years as a Deacon and Godly Play Sunday School teacher at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church. More recently, he found spiritual connection at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Concord.

He was known for his keen intellect, warm sense of humor, and deep appreciation for both nature and human connection. Merwyn was a man of great compassion and inclusivity-someone who embraced people of all backgrounds and faiths with open arms and a loving heart.

After being diagnosed with dementia in 2017 and experiencing increasing health challenges following a fall in 2022, Merwyn remained surrounded by love and care. He was under the attentive support of Contra Costa Memory Care and Sequoia Hospice during his final months. In the days before his passing, he faced respiratory complications but was kept comfortable and at peace.

Merwyn passed away on Good Friday-a season he held dear. His family finds comfort in the belief that, in his own gentle and thoughtful way, he may have chosen that time for his final journey. He will be deeply missed, joyfully remembered, and forever loved.

Merwyn was Sunday School teacher at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian church for so many years even before Godly Play started. He was a wonderful teacher and was so helpful to other teachers. We remember his warm smile and engaging personality. Our children and later a granddaughter got to be in his class.
We have missed seeing Merwyn and Roberta through the years.

My vivid memories of Merlyn are precious from Santa Sabina retreat center & especially watching his masterful godly play with lopc children for many years. I am grateful to have known him. I would have come to his memorial on 24th but have a family one that day in Madera. Prayers & comfort are sent to Roberta & the family. Linda giddings, lopc member

Many of us from LOPC church supported the new Contemplative Ministry and attended many yearly retreats held at Santa Sabina Retreat Center in San Rafael. Merwyn inspired us by his example of open honesty, joy in life, and connecting with others whom he knew or just met. He also used contemplative processes when he taught children how to tell Bible stories. He and Roberta both were supporters of Contemplative practices and hosted us at their home where they had constructed a Labyrinth.

Merwyn was a true believer and was happy contributing to the under- standing of who Jesus was and how we could serve Him. It was a privilege to develop the Wed Eve Contemplative Ministry at LOPC; Merwyn and many others volunteered to lead the service and welcome "the stranger". It was the highlight of our week.

May Merwyn find peace and joy as he joins all those who went before him into the Spirit World. We pray that he watches over Roberta and his extended family in the time to come. Merwyn will always be remembered fondly by all his friends who knew him.

Love and deep affection, from Linda Braga

Dear Roberta and Family,
I knew Merwyn at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church through the Contemplative offerings of Spiritual Formation there. We, and you Roberta, attended many wonderful contemplative retreats with Marv and Nancy Hiles in San Rafael. Whenever I am asked to consider my "heroes" I find Merwyn come to mind. His deep spiritual life shone out into his everyday life.

I am so truly sorry that you have lost this fine man.
I have another commitment that I have agreed to lead on the day of the memorial service. I wonder if there is a chance it will be recorded. If so, I would reverently watch it.

I plan to make a contribution to KQED in Merwyn's honor.
Sincerely,
Sue Gibbons

I´m was very saddened to learn about Merwyn´s passing. We met years ago at a men´s retreat. Merwyn was always so kind to me and others, a very gentle soul. He and Roberta were always so welcoming. Merwyn introduced me to his son Frank and we´ve developed a life long friendship. I always enjoyed Merwyn´s laughter and laughing together. His smile was infectious and always warmed my heart. May your many wonderful memories of Merwyn bring joy to your hearts.
