I served under Lt Bartell in Baumholder Germany, 8th Infantry Division. He was a 2nd Lt then, and a stickler for details, following orders, and coming across at times as rather stern. But there was also a side to him that was personable, fun and of course full of useless and useful, information. He even invited all the Enlisted Men in his command to a party at his Quarters---we had a riot. He was a great guy and knew of my own interest in Journalism and encouraged me to pursue it, even if meant just continuing to get better at writing, after my enlistment ended.... Thanks for that L.T.

Ereck, I am so very sorry. I know you will give yourself time to morn and to get things together but you will go on and do the things that you and Mike had planned on doing together before his illness. God bless Ereck and you have so many friends that´s just waiting to help you through anything. Love you TT

My sympathies to his loved ones. Mike was the most important instructor in my career, hands down. He left such an impression on me from one course at UT. I loved his combination of no-nonsense professionalism and ability to emotionally connect with others.

Mike & his brother grew up in the Barclay St "gang". We were neighbors with our moms & dads. I remember well his "talk" for our Amateur Radio club, Toledo Mobile Radio Association. As we aged we miss those wonderful days of friendship. May God Continue to Bless His Family. Rest In Peace my friend.

I took a class with Mr Bartell at UT. His advice changed the trajectory of my life, and I have held what he taught me dear for many years. I am grateful to have taken a class with him. May his memory be a blessing.

Michael was a lover of the written word which often clashed with my needs as director of photography to secure as much space as possible for images. But he was always fair in arguing and deciding what would be best for the readers
