Michael BLAKE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 3 to Dec. 7, 2022.
MICHAEL BLAKE 1956 - 2022 Mike passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at the age of 66, after a year-long battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Janice (nee Leger) for 35 years. Loving father of Meagan Woodhouse (Tim), Christopher (Connor) and Natalie (Tyler). Cherished grandfather of Emma Woodhouse-Lamb. Dear brother of Vicki (Cam), Mary-Lou Colwell (Allen) and Gerry (Donna). Adored Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Colleen and George Blake. Born and raised in Kitchener-Waterloo, Mike was an avid hockey player since the age of 5. His goaltending career began with the Waterloo Siskins and the Guelph Platers (Biltmore), followed by Ohio State University (1977-1981). This led him to his career highlight, playing for the Los Angeles Kings (1981-1984). In 1982, Mike infamously let in Wayne Gretzky's record breaking 92nd goal, for which his picture is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. After his hockey career, Mike pivoted to radio sales, where across 20 years he worked for CJOY, CHYM FM and the FAN 590. He then co-owned Don's Produce, a local company, with his brother Gerry. Mike led an active lifestyle. He enjoyed cycling, playing softball, teeing off at Westmount Golf & Country Club, and golf and fishing trips with friends, including Mike Yosurack and Kenny Brown. Mike and his wife Janice loved to travel, and visited their children around the world in Banff, Ireland, New Zealand and Boston. Mike was extremely proud and supportive of his three children in their pursuits in their respective careers, Meagan (MBA, Human Resources); Dr. Christopher Blake (MD); and Dr. Natalie Blake (DC). Mike will be profoundly missed by family, friends and all who were able to cross paths with him and his extreme generosity and kindness. Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Monday, December 5, 2022 from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, December 6, 2022 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Louis RC Church, 53 Allen St E, Waterloo on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Phil Reilly C.R. officiating. Interment to follow at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo. A reception will be held in the church hall. Donations in memory of Mike may be made to either Sick Kids Foundation or Grand River Hospital Foundation - Grand River Regional Cancer Centre and may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S. Waterloo at www.erbgood.com Mike and family want to extend their appreciation to the teams at Grand River Regional Cancer Centre and Hospice Waterloo Region for their extraordinary care over the last year.

Back in `77 to `81, Mike lived in my parent´s apartment. He was a great goalie. We´d have fun times during the summer with the three Miles!!! May he rest in peace!!!

Such a lovely, humble man. Mike never talked about himself, or his accomplishments. But he loved to talk about his daughters and his son. He was so proud of their achievements, and enjoyed joking about his role in getting them there. We will miss seeing you come in. You truly were one of our favourite clients. Wishing your family strength and peace .

I was introduced to Rob when I played rep baseball for Waterloo. He saw me batting once and offered me several tips. He sometimes come to my games to see how I was doing. I was in awe of Mike - he was so well known but he was such a kind and selfless person.
I was so sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family

Wow ... one of the great goalies, and person in Waterloo Minor Hockey History. I watched his NHL game in Calgary. The 3 Mike's, Yosurak, Conrad, and Blake were a big part of Waterloo. Great friends, great times, and fantastic hockey. Thank you, from all of us.

We all have so many great memories of Mike, which is a tribute to our friend.
For me it was our years as roommate and teammate at Ohio State University. This became the foundation of our close bond and lifelong friendship. Over the years, whenever we got together, we'd reminisce about our time there, each one of us digging up past stories like it happened yesterday. Mike was never missed adding a great sense of humor to his version. Thanks for the memories Blaker. We all miss you.

Professionally I worked for Mike is sales promotions at CHYM FM and 570 News, personally I knew Mike and Janice via family connections. Mike was a wonderful boss.... I learned so much from Mike and his great sales mind! He would say, "A door won't open, if you don't knock"... Such a simple statement that I say & think about to this day in my everyday job. Sending lots of love and admiration to the entire Blake clan!

Janice & children; My heart is broken, to have lost such a great person. I got to know him, when I visited you. He was kind, compassionate and funny.

On the drive home from super, I was driving, he said "We stop at stop signs here" I almost went through it. I still chuckle at that today.

You take care, love you.

Sending hugs

My deepest condolences on Mike's passing.

Mike was a great guy. Notwithstanding his superb athletic abilities, which launched his NHL career, Mike harboured no air of superiority or sense of entitlement. His humility and common touch endeared him to all. I fondly remember our baseball team eagerly awaiting the arrival of Mike and his friend from Kitchener and not only because they gave our team credibility.

After hockey Mike worked hard in a number of careers without complaint. He did what had to be done. His devotion to family was exemplary.

Mike died too young with so much more to offer. Very tragic.

Our paths have not crossed for many years but my daughter Sandra and I have nothing but terrific memories of spending time with Mike and Janice and most specifically Natalie. Dance, dance competitions, sleepovers, baking, grad pictures by the backyard pool and backyard concerts (Andrew Allen) to name a few. Our hearts go out to you and your entire family. Mike was taken far too young. The next few days (and many more to come) will be difficult - I am glad that you have each other to provide support and to lean on. With our sincerest condolences - Karen, Sandra and Peter

Mike was one of the kindest and gentlest men I´ve ever worked with. So humble. He always had a smile and a minute to chat for everyone in the office at CHYM/CKGL! So sad he´s been taken so young :( My deepest condolences to his family, friends & co-workers. Xx

We remember Mike as a congenial fun person who lived life to the fullest. The Ball Breakers certainly appreciated his skill when playing against teams such as the "Medicine Men"

He frequently proclaimed his love for his beautiful and cherished wife Janice;
He was thoroughly in love and profoundly proud of his 3 accomplished children.
He was a true gentle man.
Such a tragic loss of humanity; and far too soon.

"You were his angels and he is now yours."

Our Deepest Sympathy

I remember as a young person watching Mike play goal in Waterloo minor hockey for many years. His talent, focus and energy was inspiring. What was also inspiring, was his ability to smile when things didn't quite go the way he wanted. He was a special person. My sincerest condolences to Mike's family.
