Michael Allan Budin

Michael Allan Budin, 81, of Philadelphia and Sarasota, passed away on June 21, 2024, following injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while on a morning walk. Michael's tragic, sudden passing will be profoundly felt given his life's focus on caring for his loved ones and making a difference in his community.

It's difficult to accurately portray Michael's life without describing the love story he lived with his beloved wife, Beverly Budin. She was everything to Michael. He met Beverly when they were teenagers at summer camp, and they were inseparable through nearly 60 years of marriage. They shared a love of travel, running, the performing arts, word games, shopping at Trader Joe's, and collecting glassworks. Some of their best memories are of dance performances and visiting a wide range of countries across six continents.

Born in Philadelphia to Rose and Sol Budin, Michael graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. He then earned a Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from Stanford University in 1970, before switching careers and earning his Juris Doctor (J.D.) cum laude from Harvard University Law School in 1975.

Michael began his professional pursuits led by the intrigue he found in science and math, but pivoted to a career in law. When it came to the law, his various accomplishments led to his 27 year partnership at a major Philadelphia law firm, where he was also a leader, expert and sought after speaker in the areas of municipal finance and venture financing. Michael led panels for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute also serving as a keynoter and/or panel chairman during various seminars over the years.

Upon retiring from corporate law, Michael spent ten years as general counsel for the Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System. Michael also volunteered his time with a number of non-profit groups focused on opening up more opportunities for kids. In his typical way, when he saw a film about the struggling Paul Robeson High School in Philadelphia, and their talented students, he immediately opened up conversations with the principal there, volunteering to tutor kids in math.

Michael was also a deeply committed Arts enthusiast and supporter. When he believed in organizations, he volunteered on their behalf, including appearing in operas in Sarasota, Florida, as a supernumerary, or joining with wife Beverly as ushers for orchestra, ballet, and opera companies. Michael was an avid runner (a passion he shared with several close friends) and an active racer, including completing the NY and Boston Marathons.



While Michael may have been taken suddenly, his charitable, professional and nurturing contributions will live forever in all the people who benefitted from his generosity of spirit and willingness to share his knowledge and wisdom.

Michael was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Michael is survived by his wife Beverly, his son Eric Budin and his wife Alisa Budin, his daughter Katherine McIntyre and her husband Ryan McIntyre, his grandchildren Lindsay Budin, Quinn McIntyre, and Haley Budin, and his nieces Elizabeth Eckman and Laura Sandler.

Michael's memory will be celebrated in a memorial service to be announced in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to one of Michael's treasured arts organizations including Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Ringling Museum, and BalletX.
