Hello,
We wanted to let your family and friends know that we are sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Michael C. Carlson US Army Sergeant.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

To the family of Sgt. Michael C. Carlson:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

In Memory of Michael ~ (Debra Estep)

February 6, 2009

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

August 15, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

February 20, 2007

Hello mrs.Carlson, my name is Stephen Fox, I live in Las Vegas. I was with Michael right when I got to Germany we trained together,we were deployed together in Kosovo and Iraq together, even when I came home to Vegas Shrek came to visit, when you and your family were staying at the Harrah's. Me and your son were always the big guys in ICE platoon. We worked out together and practiced running together, before we went to Iraq we were roomates. You'r son was an amazing person, he got me listening to Jhonny Cash and to this day I still listen to Cash and think of Shrek. I'm sorry I haven't wrote sooner, but after today seeing you on the news really made me happy to hear what you had to say. I will always remember Michael and smile, love Stephen Fox.....

Two years ago today was the worst day of my life. I will never understand why God chose me and Kyle over the 5 other outstanding soldiers that passed that night. All I can promise to do is never forget Shrek, Marin, Stevens, Leon, and Yolkin; and the service and duty they performed for our great country. I miss you terribly Shrek, I would trade places in a heartbeat.

To the family, I love you guys immensly. I know I've been terrible with keeping contact but this is something I don't know how to react to. I wanted to go to ANC today, but with work and school I won't be able to go. This weekend I am definitely going to be there. I'd love to see some of you again but with the distance I understand how hard it might be.

Shrek, Yolkin, Marin, Stevens, Leon ---- You ALL are missed by MANY. I will never forget, and my duty in life is to make sure your legacys continue. Rest in Peace Shrek.

June 15, 2006

Dear Mrs. Carlson,

My son, Chance Oswalt(Ozzy) served with Michael in Baqubah. He was in the other Bradley during that mission. When the boys were in Iraq, I had a blog I would go to to find out what was happening in the area they were working. Chance couldn't believe how accurate the information was. I was up late the evening of the accident and read about it before any names were mentioned. I knew in my heart it was their platoon because of the location. It was 2 days later before we heard from Chance with the news about Michael and the others. We had the privilege of meeting Jeremy Kane-one of the survivors-and felt as though we'd met a miracle. I know Michael was a miracle too because of who he was, his devotion to his fellow soldiers/brothers in arms and his desire to serve. The boys were going to Dallas to visit another platoon member, Robert Boeder. They had planned a Cancun trip.

Chance was reassigned to another unit after his was decommissioned following their return to Vilseck. He reinlisted after the service for Michael and the other soldiers while in Baqubah. He has since gone through Air Assault School, was moved to Schweinfurt, Germany, has been promoted to Sergeant and will be returning to Iraq in late July or August.

We grew attached to Fox News during that year and even though he's been back since Feb.21st 2005, we listen, watch and continue to pray for our soldiers.

We were deeply saddened by the news of the death of the boys, and my heart aches still when I hear of the loss of another mother's son.

I have long wanted to write to you and didn't know how until I found this site today when online. I ask that you pray for Chance and the others going back to Iraq.

May God continue to comfort you and your family in the knowledge that while Michael is not here, you will see him again as promised.

Sincerely,

Craig and Jan Oswalt

I can not express how truely greatful I am to have known Mike. He was a great man and it is no wonder that he went on to do great things. He is greatly missed.

My husband is currently serving in Iraq. He is stationed at the same base Mike was during his tour. At first this worried me, but I know that Mike is looking out for not only my husband, but for all his fellow soldiers who are still serving this great country of ours around the world.

I have greatly missed seeing Mike. The games of Risk that we would play with James and Rachel Carson were always fun (even though they never seemed to end). Mike is a true hero that will never be forgotten by those who knew him. Thank you for your son.

To the family of Sgt. Michael C. Carlson:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 28 May, 2006. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “What Are We to Remember?” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

Leila Campbell

I just want to say thank you to Mike's family for making the ultimate sacrifice. Mike was a great man, and a great friend. The class in which Mike wrote his now famous Credo was Senior Seminar. Mike and I sat next to each other the entire year. We talked a lot, sometimes enough to get ourselves in trouble. As the year went on Mike and I became pretty good friends. Mike and I enjoyed lifting weights together. During the year we had to do a service project, so, Mike and I decided to do our service together. We ended up doing landscaping at a community center for kids on the eastside of St. Paul for 12 hours, it suited us perfectly. The thing I love the most about Mike's credo is the fact that it wasn't something he had to think about before writing it. I remember the day he wrote it! Everybody else was stressed out about the project and didn't know what to write. I had to laugh at Mike, he wrote it in like ten minutes. That credo was completely pure, right from the hip. He didn't have to think about anything. He had it finished before the end of the class, and it remained unchanged when he handed it in. Mike was a great man and a great friend, I will truly miss him.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Carlson family in the loss of Michael. I did not know Michael, but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine person and hero. May God bring you peace in your heart as you reflect on all the wonderful memories you hold so close. Please know that you are in my heart and prayers. Today while I was at Arlington National Cemetery I stopped and prayed for Michael and his family. You were born on Feb. 14th. Happy Birthday Michael.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I want to say first of all how proud of this young man and I'm so very sorry for his families loss. I want the family to know that I am very proud of each and every person who fights for our rights here and gives us the freedom to live like we live. I have a brother right now serving in Kwait and I worry each and every day for him and everyone over there. I want to say that you have a very special place in my heart and thank you very much.

It is a shame it took a tragedy to expose us to this fine young man. Sgt. Carlson's essay is one that should be framed and hung on every wall of every office occupied by someone like me: 57 years old, approaching the backside of life, and just now attaining some of the goals he had written of at 22. Michael has most of us beat.

I salute you, Michael, and your family.

An open note to the parents of Sgt. Michael C. Carlson:

I am writing this note in response to the WSJ letter written by your son. It is truly impressive that such a young man could write such profound thoughts. I am a father of 3 girls and I hope and pray that some day my girls will have the priviledge of meeting a young man of the same caliber as your son. Your son's essay brought tears to my eyes, and I have cut that letter out of the WSJ and will refer to it often. I am in sales as a profession, and I will show this letter to others when they need the motivation to get focused and move forward with their lives. I appreciate and applaud your son for doing what he did, and I pray that God has been good to you in his absence. Your son achieved what he had written about, that is to leave a mark in history. He has left his mark, and I thank you for your sacrifice and I mourn your loss. Sincerely, Bill Blanchard

My name is SPC Kane, I had the honor and priviledge to work with Shrek for the past 3 years of my life. I want everyone to understand and know that SGT. Carlson was a soldiers soldier. He would do anything he could to better the platoon. He is loved much, and adored by many. He and the four other men that were lost on that terrible night are all missed immensly. I cant express in words about how much shrek has done for me. He was in my team. I was with him on the night of the accident. He is a man whom I will never forget, and I hope and pray that nobody will ever forget his own personal legacy. Always you are missed Shrek, always.

To the Carlson Family,

I will remember Mike always, he was an intricate part of the wrestling team at CDH. I was a cheerleader there, and also graduated with Mike. I think my fondest memories of him will be whenever he recieved a pin from one of us, and then when he wore them on his wrestling jacket and lettermans jacket. It always made me feel proud to give it to him, cause he always deserved one! My husband just returned from overseas, and we were fortunate enough to be able to attend at the buriel at Arlington. I am going to miss seeing him, but I will always keep these fond memories close to me as long as I live. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
