Michael Egle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2025.
Michael H. Egle, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, educator, and coach, passed away on March 6, 2025, at the age of 84. Mike's journey with Alzheimer's Disease began a decade ago, and he spent the last 3 years of his life being cared for at Whisper Meadows in Bothell, Washington.

Mike was born on February 8, 1941, to Larry and Antoinette Egle in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he grew up with his younger sister Marianne. He graduated from Bayview High School in Milwaukee and attended Marquette University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Physics. He then attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned his Master of Science degree in the brand-new field of Computer Science. While pursuing education beyond his Masters, he met and married his wife of 56 years, Judy Liddiard.

Together they moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1968 where Mike would be one of the founding professors in the newly established Computer Science Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Mike and Judy raised 2 children in La Crosse, daughter Debra and son David. Mike was a professor at UW-L for 32 years where he instructed and helped guide thousands of students onto their future career paths. He had great pride in his work, pioneering the large lecture/small group concept for the introductory level of Computer Science and recording hundreds of hours of TV lectures throughout the years. (He would often be seen on campus speed-walking between buildings by students and faculty alike and always provided a hearty wave to acknowledge them.)

Mike was an avid sports fan and coached baseball for more than 10 years, including teams for his son Dave, and 8th grade basketball at Blessed Sacrament Church for 18 years. He was also involved in various fantasy football and fantasy baseball leagues with colleagues from the university and friends met through church and the neighborhood. At a time before the internet made statistics readily available, Mike often compiled his own stats on his favorite players and teams. Mike was a life-long runner, running several marathons and half marathons throughout his life, including a half marathon in 2004 with his daughter Deb.

Mike and Judy were fortunate to travel often to Minnesota to visit their son Dave and family and to Washington to visit their daughter Deb and family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids, taking trips to Wisconsin Dells with them, and playing both board and card games with them. Mike enjoyed working in the garden at his home in La Crosse, which usually involved planting an over-abundance of tomatoes and zucchini. He always took great pride in his yard and its appearance.

In 2011, Mike and Judy moved to Redmond, Washington and enjoyed living in the active senior community Trilogy at Redmond Ridge. They welcomed the change from Wisconsin winters and walked in their neighborhood or worked out at the fitness center nearly every day. They enjoyed exploring their new surroundings, and Mike especially enjoyed discovering new restaurant buffets.

Mike is survived by his wife, Judy, daughter Deb (Andrew Nielsen), granddaughters Katrina and Lindsey, son Dave (Colleen Hansen), grandsons Joshua and Matthew, sister Marianne Franks, and numerous nieces and nephews.

We will miss Mike's easy smile, his love of pizza and the Green Bay Packers, his adept game playing skills, and so many things that we will look back upon to keep those memories alive in our hearts. Funeral services will be held on May 23, 2025 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Redmond, WA.

Judy, Deb and Dave,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mike. What a great guy he was. As our neighbors for many years it was fun watching Mike always working in the yard or his beautiful garden. Remember when he used to bring us all to school in the "blue bus"? I have many fond memories of him and have you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Judy. So sorry to hear of Mikes death through the Lax tribune. I lost my husband in August of 2022 so I know how sad you feel. The sadness and loneliness never really goes away. We still have our children though and that´s a wonderful thing. I am now living close to my daughter in Winona MN.. I hope you can hold your children closer and remember all the good times when you had Mike. Love from Nan Ghelfi

Mike and I worked together in the Computer Science Department for 30 years. He taped the large group lectures for the introductory course and I wrote the manual accompanying them. We worked as a team in the development and production of the course. Mike wanted me to tape a couple of lectures on computers in education one semester, which I did. Shortly after they were shown, several students in my small group told me I wasn't that bad live. End of my television career. He was great to work with and very conscientious about preparing a worthwhile learning experience. I always admired his professionalism and work with the faculty senate. I am sure he is missed by his family and also his former colleagues.

I have fond memories of running with "Micrometer Mike" who always insisted on a very precise route that he had measured. Both of his children were excellent students, and it was a pleasure to have them in class. I hope that everyone leans on each other to get through this difficult time.

So sorry for your loss. Mike was my favorite basketball coach when I played for him at Blessed Sacrament. I later had him as a teacher at UWL for Computer Science. I have great memories of Hawker!

We were sorry to read in this morning´s paper of the passing of Mike Egle. Mike and I taught together at UW-L over 25 years. Mike in Computer Science and I in Economics. Over these years, we served on many committees together. Mike was always dependable and made intelligent and rational suggestions. He was an excellent colleague and my wife and I liked him very much. Sincerely, Dick and Susan Schoenberger

My condolences to all. I was a non-traditional student in one of his early classes after graduating with a Biology/Geography L&S degree. I was born exactly 1 1/2 years after him! Floppy discs were all the rage! I write just to say how much I was impressed with his demeanor and enthusiasm for computer science. My employer at the time did not have an affinity for computerization, so I wanted to gain some knowledge as I could envision what the future might be. I can only imagine the multitude of students who were inspired to pursue a career in computer science! A wonderful legacy!
