Michael John Garippa, Sr.

I recently retired from teaching. I taught for more than 43 years, most of it in New York City public schools. Recently, I have had more time to reflect and be very grateful for those who made things just that much better. Mike was one of the colleagues I could always count on. I envied his intellect and ability to manage in some daunting situations. The longer I taught, the more I saw the importance of those acquaintances, colleagues and friends with whom we spend our days working to improve our profession and the lives of the students. Mike was a rare individual. I was fortunate to work with him for as long as he was at FDR in Brooklyn. Where I was glad to find others when I moved onto Forest Hills High for what would be my final 15 years, Mike would always stand out among the best. There were some funny times among the serious. I am grateful for all of them.

Mike Garippa was a well-respected member of the Thomas Jefferson High School English Department in East New York. He served as a voice of reason and was a mentor to many. He was tirelessly dedicated to the students of this community. Whether he challenged the students to take on the difficult AP exams, or donated his home gym equipment so the kids could get a proper workout -- Mike was all about making Jeff a better place.

As a struggling first-year teacher, Mike was an invaluable resource and helped me learn the ropes. His good natured jokes and sly smile was always accompanied by a twinkle in his eye. He spoke passionately about literature, working out and bikes - and often encouraged me to join him in the gym for a little 'light lifting' or on a ride.

I became a better person just by knowing him. Thanks, Mike.

Mike was a wonderful colleague in the English Department at FDR. His engaging smile and warm personality always brought a smile to my face. Dearest Joyceann and family,
I am so sorry for this devastating loss for all of you and send my prayers, condolences and hopes for happier memories to ease some of the sorrow.

Mike was an amazing scholar; we often chatted about one book, short story, poem, genre or another. Also,I often was assigned to the FDR Deans Office during his years there. I was often astounded at the breadth and depth of his knowledge of the literature that he taught and enjoyed in his own time. He often impressed would-be tough kids who only saw the athletic side of him UNTIL he ordered them to sit with a dictionary or work of poetry while they cooled their heels. He often won a kid over that way. Later on, there was someone to whom that kid could go for advice. (I am smiling as I write these few words.) I will remember his dedication and his ability to reach some tough customers while being a colleague's colleague.

After only a very short interview, I knew I wanted Mike in FDR's English Department. Asking our principal to hire him was a wise move on my part.
Mike was a good teacher and a good man. He was always cooperative and supportive, a team player who helped me in several potentially difficult situations. I am sorry that I am not in New York to express my condolences to his wife and family in person.
