Michael Allen Hawk, 62, died of a heart attack May 7th at home in San Francisco. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Jeanine Hawk a native of San Francisco, and her loving family, the Dimartino's. Born in Kansas City, MO to Charles and Regina Hawk he is also survived by a brother Steve and sister Robin both of the Kansas City area and a niece, three nephews and their families.
Michael was passionate and full of life. He loved people, all kinds of music, and followed basketball, football, and the San Francisco Giants enthusiastically! He was a voracious reader, loved a good debate on most any topic and was particularly engaged in politics, the environment and social justice. Currently serving as Director of Operations at California League of Conservation Voters he was described by one of his colleagues as "fundamentally committed to goodness". His work matched his passion and he was proud to be part of the mission of CLCV. He also played the golden alto whistle and was most at peace playing along the ocean at his beloved second home near Smith River in Northern California.
Before coming back to California 10 years ago, Michael and Jeanine lived in Williams, Oregon where Michael was a business owner, worked on watershed issues, human rights and sang in a local choir group while enjoying strong, lifelong friendships. While there, he converted to Judaism which was his great joy. His passionate nature, strong values, diverse interests and multi dimensional skills were at the heart of Michael Hawk. He was a loving husband, a good worker and a good friend. His work will be missed, his passion will carry on and we will hold him in our hearts forever.

It took more than a decade, but I finally watched and finished all of Big Bang Theory. It was hilarious, and I enjoyed it just like you said I would. I now have the role you had at CLCV/EnviroVoters back when we first met, and I think of you often. Crazy how time flies and things change. I hope you are at peace, my friend.

I can't believe Michael has been gone five years. It seems like a lifetime and just yesterday simultaneously. I hope if there is some version of life ever after you are at peace. CU.

Michael was my cousin and we had lost touch for so many years, but recently connected just a few weeks before his death. His first words to me were..Well you found me! And now I've lost him again before we really had a chance to catch up! From all the comments I see that he was an extraordinary man, full of life and love, friends, and family. His work in conservation mirrors my own love of the earth and I only wish I had found him sooner! Rest in peace, my dear cousin!

Michael--your boisterous laugh, your unwavering principle, your willingness to talk and listen, your dedication to your lovely bride. I'll miss it all, I'll grieve, as you would if it were me on the other side.

Michael was an incredible man, and he will truly be missed. Atavistic. That's for him because he taught me what it meant and forced me to find a way to use it enough so that I'd remember it. I would never use that word to describe him though, in fact it's practically the last adjective I would ever use to describe him, but it's so rare to meet someone who loved building his vocabulary and educating people. It made Michael one of a kind. Usually songs remind you of people, but in this case it's a word.
Thanks for making the world a better place for ever having you in it, Michael.

Michael was a dear, fierce, wonderful co-worker and friend. His generosity and commitment to helping others was larger than life. I had the gift of sharing the world of judaism with Michael and in turn was blessed to have him sing spectacularly beautifully as part of the shabbat service at our wedding two years ago. Such a mitzvah. I will always remember him with love.

I loved the bigness of Michael. Not only his physique but his spirit, his mind, his presence, his laugh. Everything i remember about him has an imposing quality to it. He did a lot of good during his time on this planet and I am grateful to have known him and worked with him. He helped found the Williams Creek Watershed Council and gave the first home to the then fledgling Klamath Siskiyou Wildlands Center, now a thriving and powerful environmental advocacy group. I will remember Michael's generosity, passion and roaring sense of humor. Sending love and support to you Jeanine…so sorry for your loss.

I still can't believe Michael has passed from this world. He is/was a committed activist who always put his elbows into what he believed. Michael commitment and inspiration made huge environmental efforts possible.
