Greenville

Michael Anthony Herbert, 72, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2015, in Greenville, SC, after an almost four year battle with cancer.

Born in Derby, England, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Raymond Herbert. Michael grew up in England but moved to Hamilton, Ontario with his family at the age of 15. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Kearney State College in Nebraska and his Ph.D. at the University of Georgia.

Michael was known throughout his life as a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend. Michael taught for a number of years, both secondary and post-secondary, in Wisconsin, Ontario, and Greenville. After teaching, he found his way into business management, working for both Stone Manufacturing and Umbro in Greenville. Combining his passions for psychology, business and people, Michael partnered with consulting firm Focus Management and later went on to become president. His work continues to positively impact companies and people across the world.

For the past five years, Michael had been a member of the Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club. Cycling was his passion and his therapy during the past few years of treatment.

Michael is survived by his wife, Martha Hart Herbert, of thirty-four years; his son David, of Bellingham, WA, and his fiancée, Erin Welch; his daughter Maggie and her husband, John Meyer, of Durham, NC; one granddaughter,

Winter, of Bellingham, WA; a brother, Perry, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Niagara Falls, Ontario; and a number of nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 10th at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Downtown Greenville, with Rev. Dr. Michael Hoyt and Rev. Patricia Gwinn officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Graham Fellowship Hall at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Moving On" Oncology Rehabilitation Program at Greenville Health System, the Cancer Society of Greenville County, or Meals on Wheels.

Marty and Maggie may God hold your hand and walk with you through this difficult time. I truly enjoyed getting to know Mike on our group 2 wheel adventures, he stuck by me as a beginner and helped me realize it didn't really matter how you ride jut so you ride.

I first met Mike at the Post office on Augusta road before I retired . There wasn't a better customer you could ask for. Always a kind word to say. The next time I met Mike was riding my bike. Mike was true mentor and motivator. My condolences to his family.

I remember the first day I rode with Mike. He told me about his cancer and that he was in remission but also warned me he best not wreck. I enjoyed his dry wit and dependability to always show up for a ride. Later he was so instrumental in getting my husband out to ride. He even got him to buy a new bike which was something I'd been trying to get him to do for years! He touched so many lives and we will miss him.
