Michael Laage Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 6, 2024.
Michael D. Laage, 45, of Oakley, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 2, 2024. Mike is survived by his parents, Beth and Mike Laage, brother Joseph, and sisters Sarah {Rob} Tanis, and Kate {Rob} Cunningham. Mike is predeceased by his sisters Emily and Betsy and his grandparents Madge and Carl Vollmar and Marie and John Laage. Mike is also survived by his nieces and nephews Emmy and Tanner Proffitt and Liam, Gus and Charlie Cunningham. He is also survived by a large family of cousins and aunts and uncles.

Mike was a graduate of Princeton High School, where he was known as "Player Mike" while he played sports and then served as team manager for a number of years. Mike was also very involved in Special Olympics, participating in track and field, softball, bowling and golf over many years. Mike was a competitor, he did not like to loose. Mike also served Special Olympics Ohio on the Executive Board for many years, representing athletes from across the state of Ohio.

Mike worked for Lowes, for over 20 years, first in Springdale, and then on Ridge Rd. He was a loyal Lowes employee, and greatly enjoyed his interaction with other employees and customers. The family is very appreciative of Lowes management for their support over the years, until the very end. He loved Lowes, and when a commercial came on the TV, we always held our hand over our heart!

Always talking sports, he enjoyed the Reds and Bengals, and XU Basketball. With his daily beer and cigar, Mike was known around both Springdale and Oakley, usually riding his electric bike. Always wearing his team logo hats and clothing. Mike lived sports, it was a passion for him.

A resident of Find-A-Way Apts. Mike loved his apartment and all the residents, as well as his support staff from LADD. The past five years at Find-A-Way were the best in his life, as he had his own apartment and freedom. Always the prankster, he never met a stranger, and was a friend to all.

Services will be held Friday, April 12th. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 3105 Madison Rd. Cincinnati, Ohio. Family will greet friends from 10:00 to 11:00am, with funeral Mass beginning at 11:00am.

To the Laage family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I just found out about Mikey. I lost contact with him during during the pandemic, but thought about him often.

After working with him at Lowe's, he became one of the best friends I ever had. So full of love and kindness. We had so much fun, years of watching monthly wrestling, bowling or when he'd call me after a Bengal's win just to say who dey! Even our trips to the book store.

This photo is from one of the monthly wrestling shows when I'd pick him up and we'd watch the show. He was best friends with Peaches the Bulldog, they loved each other. I can hear his uncontrollable laughter at her trying to lick his ears.

May you have peace in knowing he was such a bright, shining light in this world. He was a wonderful person, the best friend ever, he will be greatly missed.

Laage Family,

Very sad to hear of Mike´s passing. I always enjoyed chatting with him around Oakley or trips to Lowe´s.

He carried himself with quiet confidence and was comfortable in his own skin, a quality we should all admire.

Thoughts and prayers,

Megan, Will, Lily, and Opal Zurkuhlen
