Michael Lapointe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 5, 2025.
Kingston - Michael G. Lapointe, 74, of Kingston, RI, following a long illness, died peacefully on his birthday, February 21, 2025 at Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Sylvester J. Lapointe and Claire P. (Morrissette) Lapointe and predeceased as a child by his sister Paulette Lapointe.

Michael was a proud 1993 graduate of the University of Rhode Island Department of Theater specializing in stage and theater management. He continued his career with URI Theater as an Instructor of THE 100 Introduction to Theater, a Season House Manager, and a Poster/Program Designer. He also served full-time as a beloved Resident Hall Director for 50 years. Michael always put students first no matter what position he was holding.

Michael was also an amateur photographer with a professional outcome. Outside, he was rarely seen without a camera hanging from around his neck. He saw beauty in most every shape and texture of nature all around him and was proud of his million pictures posted on Flikkar, a photography website. Michael's photographs can be seen on walls of buildings throughout the campus.

He leaves his sister, Suzanne C. (Lapointe) McCarthy and brother-in-law, William J. McCarthy of Yarmouth Port, MA; nephews, Christopher of Plano, TX, Matthew of Duxbury, MA, and David of Nevada, TX and Great Nephew, Brynn of Marshfield, MA and Great Nieces, Emily of Plano, TX and Ella of Marshfield, MA.

Michael also leaves behind all the students whose lives he touched and his URI colleagues who were all an important part of Michael's 50 years at URI.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the URI theater late May or early June. The event will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the University of Rhode Island Theater and will be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to THE DARLINGTON MORTUARY OF L. HEROUX & SONS, 1042 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket, RI.

I only knew Michael for a few years,, but I quickly grew to respect him, particularly his commitment to students. We shared that, and a love of films. He will be missed, but he was successful in what I consider "success" which is making your little corner of the world a little bit better place during your time there. Michael certainly did.

I met Michael in 1975 when he was an evening manager in Browning Hall. We became instant friends as we would frequently talk in the dorm office. Several of us chose Hutchinson Hall for our sophomore year and beyond dorm. The hall director at Hutchinson was planning on leaving. Michael came over to be an evening manager in 1976. He applied for the hall director at Hutchinson and got the job as hall director. Michael was a friend to all and made an environment that was warm and welcoming. He truly cared about us as students. I didn´t want to leave the dorm when I graduated in 1979. Those years were some of the best of my life and I have Michael to thank for that. I fortunately got to see Michael on last time when my youngest daughter attended URI. I am very glad I took that time to hang out with him. Rest in peace my friend and hope to see you again when my day comes. -Peter Bartram

I´m so very sorry to lose such a fun loving and wonderful man. I lived in Hutch for 3 years and had some great memories driving "Jefe" nuts with my antics. Rest in peace big fella as you´ll be sorely missed

Michael was a rare individual who I cherish came into my life story, albeit briefly. I met Michael in 2017 when I joined URI as the Director of Res Life and asst. VPSA. We immediately connected over our shared commitment to students, their growth and development, but also film and popular culture over the last 5+ decades. While my time at URI was limited to health and other reasons, I count my time with Michael as one of the bright spots during my time there. As I am departing RI, he was one of a very few (<5) people I wanted to say "goodbye" to. I regret that won't be possible with him, but I think he knows that I felt strongly about him, his commitment, his values, etc. ..or at least I hope so. There are not many people in our field (Res Life/Student Affairs) that have this longevity of service and commitment, but that's what makes him stand out. I will miss him, but celebrate his lifelong commitment to students.

Sue and your entire family I am so sorry for your loss. Michael will be missed so much. He came into the salon everyday, I will miss seeing him. He always made our day.
He was the kindest person, so giving and thoughtful to so many.
The world lost a good one!
I will be keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Michael was a regular client of mine in the salon. He would always light up the atmosphere with his sense of humor and ability to make everyone smile. He will be missed.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Michael was truly a wonderful friend and a great person. I worked with him for over 38 years couldn´t ask for a more caring wonderful person to ever have the pleasure of meeting. He was a great inspiration to everyone he met along the way. He will be forever in my heart and greatly missed. RIP Michael
