Michael Richard Lewis
September 27, 1939 - November 6, 2018
Michael R. Lewis, 79, of Providence, Utah, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, Nov. 6, due to kidney failure. He was born Sept. 27, 1939, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Leila and Rulon Lewis. He grew up helping on the family farm and playing sports in school.
After his graduation from Madison High School with the class of 1957 he attended the University of Idaho for 3 years and then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Uruguay for 2 1/2 years. After his mission he attended BYU in Provo, UT.
He married Claudia Pomeroy in the Los Angeles Temple on Feb. 5, 1964. He graduated from BYU in the spring of that year. They moved to Maryland, and he worked for the US State Dept. for 2 years. He attended a meeting in San Diego, Calif., during that time and was offered a job at San Diego State University in the administration area. He gladly accepted it. They were happy to get back to the western part of the US with Claudia being from the Los Angeles area and he from Rexburg. Thus his career began.
They stayed in San Diego for 8 years and moved on to Chico State in Chico, (northern) Calif. After 9 years they moved to Providence, UT, where Mike worked for 20 years at Utah State University. After he took early retirement they began an adventure living in Cairo, Egypt, for 3 1/2 years where he worked for American University Cairo. They loved their time there and had many great adventures traveling around Egypt and several other countries.
They made many lifelong friends wherever they lived. After returning to Providence, they were called to serve in the Logan Temple for 6 years. That led them to be called to serve in the Nauvoo Temple for 6 months during the summer of 2013 when the temple is very busy. After being home for 7 months they were then called to serve in the Alabama Birmingham Mission office for 1 year. They loved serving the Lord in these capacities.
They have called Providence home for the past 35 years. Mike served on the City Council in Providence. Mike served in the Church in a branch presidency, bishopric and high council. He loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its teachings. He had a firm Testimony of the Church. He loved playing sports as long as his health would allow him. He watched ball games on TV and also attended the Aggie games. He had a season ticket to the Aggie football games for a long time, and this year he just missed two of them.
We would like to thank Dr. Michael Stones for his loving care of Mike. He was his doctor for many years.
He leaves behind his wife Claudia of 54 years; his son Tom and wife Eileen and their sons Ryan (Sephora and their daughter Layla) and Bryce (Kaylie). Mike's other son is Evan (Clara and their children Taylor, Emma and Michaela). He loved his family dearly!
He was preceded in death by his parents and both of his brothers, Bob and Van.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at the LDS Church at 262 Canyon Road (the red brick building) in Providence. There will be a viewing Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., in Logan. There will also be a viewing before the services at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be following the services in the Providence Cemetery.
